Art and memory in Mario Praz’s "House of Life"

Zamiast autobiografii Mario Praz (1896-1982) proponuje niezwykły przewodnik po swoich zbiorach dzieł sztuki, mebli i artefaktów użytkowych. Gromadzone od czasów studenckich "antyki" stają się kanwą wielowarstwowej opowieści nie tyle o siedzibach badacza przy Via Giulia (Palazzo Ricci) i Via Zanardelli (Palazzo Primoli) w Rzymie, ile o jego estetycznych upodobaniach i pasjach literaturoznawczych. Niemożliwe zatem wydaje się interpretowanie La casa della vita (1958, rozsz. 1979) wyłącznie jako komentarza do przekształconego w muzeum biograficzne mieszkania uczonego. Casa della vita, "dom życia" Praza to przestrzeń pamięci, w której każdy przedmiot, usytuowany w starannie wybranym miejscu, pełni funkcję scenograficzną i mnemoniczną. Artystyczne, historyczne i emocjonalne skojarzenia, jakie wywołują poszczególne elementy opisywanej kolekcji, skłaniają do refleksji nad proponowaną przez Praza koncepcją powiązań sztuki i pamięci oraz ich wzajemnego oddziaływania.

The main purpose of the essay is to analyse the significance of memory and its connection to art in an unusual guidebook to the writer’s house - an autobiographic novel by Italian comparatist and lecturer, Mario Praz (1896-1982). First of all, the author’s relationship to singular objects of his collection is analysed in the context of his intellectual interests. As the reading of the text conducted exclusively from the biographical point of view seems to be limiting, the connections between Praz’s passion for art and literature and his strategies of remembering and depicting the past are discussed thoroughly. Moreover, various types of memory (of interpersonal relations, historical facts and,for example, the events presented within a picture of the collection) and the intertextuality of Praz’s narrative, are examined in relation to the functions (scenic and mnemonic) of each artefact. Last but not least, the essay faces the question of the commemorative function of an art collection and the meaning of a particularly organized house as substitutes of a successful private life.
