Translation of culture-specific items on the basis of Polish and English subtitles to chosen Polish movies.

Niniejsza praca prezentuje proces tłumaczenia odniesień kulturowych w przekładzie audiowizualnym oraz strategii stosowanych przy tłumaczeniu pozajęzykowych odniesień kulturowych. Głównym celem autorki była analiza strategii tłumaczeniowych, które zostały użyte podczas tłumaczenia na język angielski napisów do takich filmów jak: Popiół i Diament, Barwy Ochronne, Komornik. Jako bazę do analizy posłużyła klasyfikacja strategii tłumaczeniowych używanych do przekładu pozajęzykowych odniesień kulturowych zaprezentowana przez Jana Pedersena w artykule pt. How is culture rendered in subtitles? W pierwszym rozdziale pracy zaprezentowano przekład audiowizualny oraz jego trzy główne metody: wersję lektorską, dubbing oraz wersję napisową. Drugi rozdział pracy omawia zagadnienie transferu kulturowego w przekładzie oraz klasyfikację strategii tłumaczeniowych opisaną przez Pedersena w wyżej wspomnianym artykule. W trzecim rozdziale autorka opisuje wyniki analizy ilościowej oraz jakościowej przeprowadzonej na wybranym materiale badawczym, który opiera się na wersjach napisowych do trzech polskich filmów oraz ich tłumaczeniach na język angielski.

This paper deals with the issue of translating culture-specific elements in audiovisual translationas well as the strategies which can be used while translating culture-bound elements. The main aim of the author of this paper was to present the analysis of the translation strategies which wereused while translating from Polish to English the subtitles to three polish movies: Ashes and Diamonds, Camouflage and the Collector. The Theoretical background for the analysis was based on the classification of the translation strategies used while translating culture-specific items presented by Jan Pedersen in his article entitled: How is culture rendered inubtitles? The first chapter of the paper presents the audiovisual translation and its three main methods, namely voice over, dubbing and subtitles. The second chapter deals with the notion of translating culture-specific elements and it also presents the classification of the translating strategies presented by Pedersen in his article. In the third chapter the author describes the outcome of the quantitative as well as qualitative analysis of the chosen subtitles and their translations from Polish to English.
