The image of Chernobyl disaster in selected reportage texts of Kate Brown, Svetlana Alexievich and Igor Kostin

Katastrofa nuklearna, do której doszło 26 kwietnia 1986 roku w Czarnobylskiej Elektrowni Atomowej wciąż budzi kontrowersje. Istnieje wiele kwestii, które do dzisiaj pozostają niewyjaśnione, a reakcja na zdarzenie ogólnoświatowych mediów i organizacji międzynarodowych poddawana jest ciągłej krytyce. Autorka niniejszej pracy bada obraz katastrofy w trzech tekstach reportażowych. Jako adekwatną metodę badania wybrała analizę komparatystyczną, dzięki której możliwe jest uwypuklenie różnic i podobieństw pomiędzy reportażami. Analizie zostały poddane książki: „Czarnobylska modlitwa. Kronika przyszłości” Swietłany Aleksijewicz, „Czarnobyl. Instrukcje przetrwania” Kate Brown i „Czarnobyl. Spowiedź reportera” Igora Kostina. Każdy z reporterów stworzył unikatowy obraz katastrofy, na co wpływ miało przede wszystkim: pochodzenie, płeć, zawód, osobisty stosunek autora do zdarzenia oraz czas pracy nad reportażem. Wnikliwa analiza każdej z książek umożliwiła wysnuć konkretne wnioski.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster which occurred on the 26th April 1986 has been still considered controversial until these days. A substantial number of factors cannot be explained to the satisfactory level. Furthermore, there has been plenty of criticism of how the media has covered the story worldwide and how the international organizations reacted on Chernobyl disaster. In this study, multiple perspectives of the event have been presented by exploring three different reportages conducted by other researchers. The comparative analysis has been chosen as the most adequate method enabling to highlight key differences and similarities between different papers. The following books have been analysed: ”Chernobyl Prayer. A Chronicle of the Future” by Svetlana Alexievich, "Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future" by Kate Brown and ”Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter” by Igor Kostin. Each reporter has created an unique image of Chernobyl disaster, which was influenced primarily by nationality, gender, profession, personal author' s opinion on the event and the time of writting reportage. Accurate books' analysis has allowed to draw exact conclusions.
