The Evolution of the Funeral Services Sector in Poland between 1989 and 1999

W pracy omówiono rozwój branży usług pogrzebowych w Polsce w latach 1989-1999. Skupiono się na uwzględnieniu historycznego kontekstu okresu powstawania wielu polskich firm funeralnych po liberalizacji gospodarki w okresie transformacji ustrojowej w Polsce po 1989 r. Przedstawiony został proces kształtowania się etosu polskiego przedsiębiorcy pogrzebowego, pozbawionego przez lata szansy na funkcjonowanie w ramach organicznego i stopniowego rozwoju branży na wzór zachodnich zakładów funeralnych. Działalność prywatnej przedsiębiorczości pogrzebowej została omówiona w kontekście jej wpływu na ewolucję podejścia do śmierci w społeczeństwie polskim, zmieniającym się gwałtownie na skutek przemian polityczno-gospodarczych zachodzących w ostatniej dekadzie XX w.

The paper discusses the development of the funeral services industry in Poland between 1989 and 1999. It focuses on the historical context of the period during which many Polish funeral companies emerged following the liberalization of the economy during the post-1989 systemic transformation. The process of shaping the ethos of the Polish funeral entrepreneur is presented, one who, for many years, had been deprived of the opportunity to operate within an organic and gradual development of the industry, as seen in Western funeral establishments. The activities of private funeral enterprises are examined in the context of their influence on the evolution of attitudes toward death in Polish society, which was undergoing rapid change as a result of the political and economic transformations of the final decade of the 20th century.
