The idea of a beautiful book in "Polish Bookbinding Magazine"

Tematem opracowania jest refleksja nad pojęciem pięknej książki, zawarta w artykułach „Polskiej Gazety Introligatorskiej” – miesięcznika wydawanego w Poznaniu w latach 1928–1934. We wstępie omówiony został kontekst badawczy oraz przyjęta konstrukcja pracy. W pierwszym i drugim rozdziale przybliżono charakter wydawnictwa oraz jego rolę i znaczenie dla polskiego środowiska introligatorskiego lat 30. Na postawie literatury oraz kilkudziesięciu numerów czasopisma ukazano historię powstania gazety oraz przyświecające jej twórcom idee. W kolejnym rozdziale przybliżona została geneza kształtowania się pojęcia pięknej książki. Przedstawiono okoliczności formowania się ruchu na rzecz odnowy rzemiosła, mającego miejsce pod koniec XIX wieku w Wielkiej Brytanii, z uwzględnieniem działalności na rzecz rozwoju sztuki książki takich przedstawicieli jak William Morris czy James Cobden-Sanderson. W kolejnych rozdziałach na podstawie przykładów artykułów „Polskiej Gazety Introligatorskiej” ukazano wpływ myśli brytyjskiej na polskie środowisko introligatorskie, a także przytoczono indywidualne refleksje autorów artykułów na temat estetyki oprawy, rozpatrywanej przez pryzmat teorii sztuki i dotyczących zasad w kwestii dotyczących koloru, proporcji i ornamentacji.

The subject of the study is a reflection on the concept of a beautiful book, contained in the articles of the "Polska Gazeta Introligatorska" – a monthly magazine published in Poznań in 1928–1934. The introduction presents the research context and the adopted structure of the work. The first and second chapters present the nature of the publication and its role and importance for the Polish bookbinding community in the 1930s. On the basis of the literature and several dozen issues of the magazine, the history of the creation of the magzine and the ideas guiding its authors are presented. The next chapter discusses the genesis of the formation of the concept of a beautiful book. The circumstances of the formation of the movement for the renewal of craftsmanship taking place at the end of the nineteenth century in Great Britain are presented, taking into account the activity for the development of book art of such representatives as William Morris and James Cobden-Sanderson. In the following chapters, the influence of British thought on the Polish bookbinding community is shown on the basis of examples from the articles of "Polska Gazeta Introligatorska", as well as individual reflections of the authors of the articles on the aesthetics of binding, considered through the prism of art theory and concerning the principles on the issues of colour, proportion and ornamentation.
