Comparative analysis of two adaptations of Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina"

Celem i przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest porównanie dwu adaptacji filmowych "Anny Kareniny" Lwa Tołstoja, jak również skonfrontowanie ich z pierwowzorem literackim. Pierwszy film powstał w 1967 roku i wyreżyserował go Aleksander Zarchi. W główną rolę kobiecą wcieliła się Tatiana Samojłowa. Druga wersja "Anny Kareniny", w reżyserii Joe Wrighta została zrealizowana w 2012 roku. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów, wstępu i zakończenia. Pierwszy rozdział, będący jednocześnie wprowadzeniem, zawiera podstawowe pojęcia związane z problematyką adaptacji filmowej. Swoją uwagę koncentruję również na szczególnych walorach twórczości Tołstoja, będącej inspiracją dla wielu reżyserów. Zagadnienia omawiane w tej części dotyczą także przekładalności powieści na język filmowy. Drugi rozdział przedstawia różnice i podobieństwa między "Anną Kareniną" w reżyserii Aleksandra Zarchiego a jej odpowiednikiem literackim. Analizie zostają poddane również filmowe środki wyrazu. W trzecim rozdziale opisuję adaptację "Anny Kareniny", w reżyserii Joego Wrighta. Omawiam także różnice i podobieństwa między filmem a powieścią. W czwartym rozdziale porównuję dwie wizje filmowe "Anny Kareniny" – brytyjską i radziecką.

The aim and subject of the present thesis was to compare two film adaptations of "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy, and confront them with the original novel. The first film was shot in 1967 and directed by Aleksandr Zarkhi. The female lead is portrayed by Tatyana Samojlova. The second version of Anna Karenina, directed by Joe Wright, was produced in 2012. The thesis consists of four chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter introduces basic concepts related to the issues associated with film adaptation. Our attention is also concentrated on the special qualities of Tolstoy's writings, which inspired many filmmakers. The topics covered in this section concern the translatability of a novel into film. The second chapter demonstrates the similarities and differences between the "Anna Karenina" directed by Aleksandr Zarkhi and its literary counterpart. Additionally, the film means of expression are analyzed. In the third chapter, Joe Wright’s adaptation of "Anna Karenina" is described. The similarities and differences between the movie and the novel are described. In the fourth chapter, a comparison is made between the British and the Soviet film vision of "Anna Karenina".
