IMPACT OF AGILE TECHNIQUES INTRODUCTION ON THE QUALITY OF TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION, BASED ON MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS

Celem niniejszej pracy jest ocena wpływu wprowadzenia technik zwinnych na jakość dokumentacji technicznej, na tle funkcjonowania Motoroli Solutions. Jej realizacja wymaga udowodnienia hipotezy, iż wprowadzenie technik zwinnych wpłynie bezpośrednio na jakość dokumentacji technicznej pisanej przez zespół dokumentalistów w firmie Motoroli Solutions oraz sprawi, że mniej defektów będzie zgłaszanych przez zespół testerów podczas trwania projektu.Praca magisterska składa się z sześciu rozdziałów. W pierszym rozdziale opisano jak wygląda zarządzanie jakością w dziale dokumentacji technicznej w Motoroli Solutions. Nastepnie omówiono czym tak naprawdę zajmuje się firma. Przedstawiono wszystkie systemy teleinformatyczne powstałe w Motoroli Solutions oraz mniejsze produkty. W drugim rozdziale opisano charaktrerystykę projektów w dziale dokumentacji technicznej w Motoroli Solutions i jaki jest podział ról w zespole dokumentalistów. Następnie autor scharakteryzował występujące techniki zwinne oraz przedstawił ich zalety. W rozdziale szóstym opisano przebieg wprowadzania zmiany oraz wyniki poszczególnych iteracji z analizą spotkań, które pomogły wprowadzić techniki zwinne Scrum do działu dokumentacji technicznej.W celu weryfikacji postawionej hipotezy autor przeprowadził zmiany ról w zespole oraz zmiany prowadzenia kolejnego projektu w dziale dokumentalistów. Opis przeprowadzonych szkoleń, spotkań i wyników kolejnych iteracji w projekcie prowadzonym metodą zwinną zostały przedstawione w rozdziale piątym.Analizę wyników przeprowadzono porównując ilość i czas naprawiania defektów w dwóch projektach, gdzie jeden był prowadzony metodą kaskadową, a drugi zwinną. Były to projekty zaktualizowania dokumentacji technicznej dla systemu Dimetra przez zespół dokumentalistów w firmie Motorola Solutions. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdziły założoną hipotezę. Ustanowiona, wdrożona i utrzymywana metoda zwinna Scrum sprzyja poprawie jakości treści pisanych w dziale dokumentalistów w firmie Motorola Solutions.

The aim of this study is to assess the impact of agile techniques introduction on the quality of technical documentation, based on Motorola Solutions study. Its realisation requires the proof of the hypothesis that the introduction of agile techniques will directly affect the quality of technical documentation written by the technical writers team at Motorola Solutions and fewer defects will be reported by the testers team during the project.Master's thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter describes the quality management in the technical documentation department at Motorola Solutions. Then we discuss what the company does. It describes all telecommunication systems and smaller products developed by Motorola Solutions. The second chapter describes characteristics of projects in the technical documentation department at Motorola Solutions and the division of roles. Then the author describes the present agile techniques and their advantages. The sixth chapter describes the process of change and the results of each iteration with the analysis of the meetings, which helped to introduce Agile techniques like Scrum in the technical documentation department.In order to verify the hypothesis, the author conducted a change of roles in the team and also changed the rules for the subsequent project in the documentation department. Description of trainings, meetings and results of successive iterations in a project led in Agile are presented in chapter five.The analysis of results was performed by comparing the number of defects and their repair time in two projects, one of which was driven by cascade techniques, and the other one by Agile. These projects were focused on updating technical documentation for Dimetra system and were conducted by technical writers team at Motorola Solutions. The results confirmed the established hypothesis. Well-established, implemented and maintained Agile Scrum method helps to improve the quality of content written in the documentation department at Motorola Solutions.
