Demaskowanie stereotypów płci: powieść Gene Kemp pt. The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler i jej tłumaczenie na język polski

Niniejsza praca ma na celu ustalenie, czy możliwe jest pominięcie odniesień do płci w polskim tłumaczeniu powieści Gene Kemp pod tytułem „The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler”, oraz bada konsekwencje stosowania strategii ukrywania płci narratorki i zarazem głównej bohaterki. Gene Kemp ujawnia, że Tyke jest dziewczynką, dopiero na samym końcu tekstu, demaskując wszechobecność uprzedzeń i stereotypów dotyczących płci. Dlatego też, o ile tłumacz nie zamierza zniweczyć zamiarów autorki, powinien zadbać o to, by czytelnik do końca narracji nie zdawał sobie sprawy, że Tyke nie jest chłopcem. Uważam, że zadanie to jest wykonalne, choć obciążone pewnymi konsekwencjami. Rozdział 1 pracy przedstawia opis stereotypów dotyczących zachowania dzieci danej płci i ogólny zarys sposobu, w jaki stereotypy te są wykorzystane w książce. Rozdział 2 podaje informacje językoznawcze, dotyczące użycia rodzaju gramatycznego w języku polskim i angielskim, pojęcia kohezji (spójności syntagmatycznej) i koherencji (spójności semantycznej), które mogą wywierać wpływ na interpretację powieści. Rozdział 3 zawiera analizę wybranych procedur i strategii tłumaczenia, a także opisuje skutki zastosowania narracji bezpłciowej w języku polskim. Za materiał do analizy posłużyły moje własne przekłady fragmentów powieści. Z zebranego w toku badań materiału i dokonanych analiz wynika, że w tłumaczeniu pozbawionym językowych znaczników płci pojawiają się liczne zmiany i modyfikacje mające wpływ na postrzeganie postaci głównej bohaterki oraz interpretację powieści.

The present work intends to determine whether the concealment of the gender markers is feasible in the Polish text of Gene Kemp’s The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler and offers a detailed look into the consequences of the translation strategies applied with the purpose of hiding the narrator’s gender. The novel reveals the gender of the narrator/protagonist only at the end in order to demonstrate the pervasiveness of gender stereotypes. Therefore, if the translator does not want to undermine the message of the book, Tyke’s gender should remain hidden in the Polish version too. Chapter 1 provides an overview of gender stereotypes associated with children’s behaviour, and the manner in which they are exploited in the book. Chapter 2 concentrates on the linguistic framework, such as the use of the grammatical gender in the English and Polish languages, the concepts of coherence and cohesion, the elements of the narration that have an influence on the interpretation of the novel. Chapter 3 offers an analysis of the translation strategies employed in the Polish text and the outcomes of the resulting ungendered translation. The material for analysis is drawn from the author’s own translation of excerpts from the novel. After a thorough analysis, the paper shows that the challenge of the genderless text written in Polish lies not only in the difficulty of finding an ungendered structure, but also in the numerous changes and shifts caused by those structures.
