Dancing the culture : the museum as an example of labyrinthine architecture and a cognitive scheme - some remarks from the perspective of cultural semiotics

Muzeum pełni w świecie współczesnym ważną funkcję kulturotwórczą oraz edukacyjną. Niemniej poza czysto instytucjonalnym wymiarem ma ono również wymiar kognitywny. Nie tylko może stanowić model semiosfery, procesów pozyskiwania, gromadzenia, udostępniania i przekazywania wiedzy, ale także - jako niezwykle polimorficzny i elastyczny intellectual paradigm - pełni istotną funkcję poznawczą. Jednocześnie muzeum rozumiane jako budowl a i model poznawczy przywołuje tu inną, aczkolwiek pokrewną kategorię - labirynt. Opierając się na tym zestawieniu, autor dokonuje reinterpretacji mitu o Minotaurze i labiryncie z perspektywy semiotyki kultury. Zdaniem autora fabuła mitu wraz z ważnymi figurami kultury, takimi jak Minotaur, budowla o skomplikowanym układzie pomieszczeń czy Tezeusz, może posłużyć za podstawę do rekonstrukcji procesu semiozy, mechanizmów formułowania niewłaściwych, błędnych znaczeń oraz strategii ich korygowania.

The museum plays an important educational and culture forming role in the modern world. Beside this purely institutional dimension, there is also a cognitive one. The museum, however, may not only be a model of the semiosphere or of the processes of acquiring, collecting, sharing, and transferring of knowledge. It also plays a significant cognitive function as an extremely polymorphic and flexible intellectual paradigm. Simultaneously, the museum conceived as a building and a cognitive scheme evokes a different but related structure here. It is a labyrinth. On the basis on this parallel, the author reinterprets the myth of the Minotaur from the perspective of cultural semiotics. According to the author, the plot of the myth, along with all the important figures of culture such as the Minotaur, the monumental building with a complicated arrangement of rooms, and Theseus can be used as a structural pattern for the reconstruction of the semiosis processes, mechanisms responsible for formulating improper and false meanings, as well as the strategies of rectifying them.
