The Interior by M. Maeterlinck in Light of the Theory of the Rites of Passage

W swojej pracy analizuję dramat Wnętrze Maurica Maeterlincka w kontekście trójfazowej teorii obrzędów przejścia Arnolda van Gennepa. Celem pracy jest zrozumienie, jak struktura i motywy dramatu wpisują się w teorię obrzędów przejścia oraz w jaki sposób wpływają na interpretację postaci i zdarzeń. Posługuję się koncepcją Victora Turnera o liminalności, aby ukazać, że akcja dramatu koncentruje się na fazie liminalnej, w której bohaterowie przechodzą przez stan zawieszenia i transformacji. Analizowane jest także w jaki sposób różne postacie uczestniczą w rytuale i jakie są ich role w tej ceremonii. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest symbolicznym elementom dramatu.

In my thesis, I analyze Maurice Maeterlinck play The Interior in the context of Arnold van Gennep three-phase theory of rites of passage. The aim of the thesis is to understand how the structure and motifs of the play fit into the theory of rites of passage and how they influence the interpretation of characters and events. I use Victor Turner’s concept of liminality to show that the action of the play focuses on the liminal phase, in which the characters go through a state of suspension and transformation. The analysis also examines how different characters participate in the ritual and what their roles are in this ceremony. The last chapter is devoted to the symbolic elements of the play.
