The dramaturgies of space

Autorka proponuje zastosowanie dramaturgii, rozumianej jako kompozycja umożliwiająca prowokowanie wydarzeń, w dziedzinie architektury, co oznacza, że przestrzeń i układ elementów przestrzennych determinuje przebieg działań i wypadków. Dramaturgia w architekturze odnosi się do sposobów, w jakie budynki sugerują możliwości szeregu metod, na jakie mogą być używane i dopełniane przez wydarzenia. Zgodnie z teorią Michela de Certeau przestrzeń to „praktykowane miejsce” – warunkuje ruch i praktyki, co można dostrzec w architekturze narzucającej użytkownikom określone działania (np. klasztor, dworzec kolejowy, lotnisko, szkoła, galeria handlowa) lub wręcz ograniczającej ich swobodę, dyscyplinującej i restrykcyjnie regulującej ich zachowanie (np. więzienie czy hostile architecture). Użytkownicy stosują szereg taktyk, by wymknąć się nakazom i regulacjom przestrzennym, modyfikują dramaturgię miast i wprowadzają własne zasady jej użytkowania. Ujęcie przestrzeni publicznej w kategoriach dramaturgii pozwala zobaczyć ją jako pole napięć, teren działań agonistycznych sił i pokazać ją jako strukturę dynamiczną, w której zachodzą nieustanne procesy.

The author proposes to use dramaturgy, understood as a composition that allows provoking events, in the field of architecture, which means that the space and arrangement of spatial elements determines the course of actions and accidents. Dramaturgy in architecture refers to the ways in which buildings suggest the possibilities of a number of methods that can be used and complemented by events. According to Michel de Certeau's theory, space is a “practised place” – it determines the movement and practices that can be seen in architecture, which imposes certain activities on users (e.g a monastery, railway station, airport, school, shopping gallery) or even restricts their freedom, disciplines and restrictively regulates their behaviors (e.g prison or hostile architecture). Users employ a number of tactics to escape spatial orders and regulations, modify the urban dramaturgy and introduce their own rules for its use. The inclusion of public space in terms of dramaturgy allows us to see it as a field of tension, an area of agonistic forces, and show it as a dynamic structure in which ongoing processes take place.
