The Canting Arms in Polish Heraldry in 16th Century Heraldic Badges

Praca Herby mówiące w heraldyce polskiej XVI stulecia. Godła porusza zagadnienie herbów mówiących, które w polskich badaniach heraldycznych nie zostało jeszcze opracowane. Samo określenie pojawia się tylko u jednego z badaczy, Józefa Szymańskiego. Herbem mówiącym jest zgodnie z definicją tego historyka herb, którego nazwa oraz godło pokrywają się. W pracy zawarte zostały te, które powstały w XVI w. Podstawowym źródłem wykorzystanym w badaniach jest Herbarz rycerstwa polskiego XVI w., autorstwa wcześniej wspomnianego Józefa Szymańskiego. W części głównej pracy zostało omówione 27 herbów mówiących, podzielonych na 3 grupy tematyczne. Pierwsza skupia się wokół wizerunku zwierząt, druga roślin, a trzecia przedmiotów. W pracy podjęto próbę odczytania symboliki tych elementów, a także barw godła i tarczy herbowej. Połączone to zostało z przedstawieniem historii rodzin i dokonań osób otrzymujących nadanie szlachectwa.

This BA paper brings up an issue of canting arms, which was not worked out in Polish heraldry yet. The term was used only by one of researchers, Józef Szymański. The canting arm is, according to definition of this historian, a coat of arms whose name and badge are the same. The paper describes the ones which were created in 16th century. The main source used in the research is Józef Szymański's Roll of Arms of Polish Knighthood in the 16th Century.In the main part of this paper 27 canting arms are described and divided into 3 groups. The first of them focuses on animals, the second one – plants and the third one – things. In the paper I tried to read the symbolism of these elements and colours of heraldic badges and escutcheons. It is connected with presenting family histories and accomplishments of the nobles.
