Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest analiza lęku w noweli „Wenus z Ille” Pospera Mérimée’go, opublikowanej w 1837 roku. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest przedstawieniu narzędzi metodologicznych, czyli teorii niesamowitości (Unheimlich) Zygmunta Freuda oraz definicji gatunku fantastyki Tzvetana Todorova oraz H.P. Lovecrafta. Kategorie te pozwalają wskazać trzy główne możliwości interpretacji utworu, z których każda koncentruje się na tytułowym posągu. Drugi rozdział zawiera analizę lęku wynikającego z niepewności oraz spotkaniem z czymś znanym a zarazem obcym. Trzeci rozdział skupia się na lęku wypartym, związanym ze strachem przed małżeństwem i seksualnością.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to analyze anxiety in Prosper Mérimée’s short story ‘The Venus of Ille’, published in 1837. The first chapter is dedicated to present the methodological tools, specifically Sigmund Freud’s theory of the Uncanny (Unheimlich) and the definitions of the fantastic genre by Tzvetan Todorov and H.P. Lovecraft. These categories allow to distinguish three main possibilities of interpretation, each focusing on the statue of Venus. The second chapter proceeds to analyze the anxiety that results from uncertainty and the encounter with something both familiar and strange. The third chapter focuses on repressed anxiety, associated with fear of marriage and sexuality.

L’objectif du présent mémoire de licence est l’analyse de l’angoisse dans la nouvelle « La Vénus d’Ille » de Prosper Mérimée, publiée en 1837. Le premier chapitre est dédié à la présentation des outils méthodologiques, c’est-à-dire la théorie de l’Inquiétante Étrangeté (Unheimlich) de Sigmund Freud et les définitions du genre fantastique de Tzvetan Todorov et H.P. Lovecraft. Ces catégories permettent de dégager trois principales possibilités d’interprétation, dont chacune se concentre sur la statue éponyme. Le deuxième chapitre procède à une analyse de l’angoisse qui résulte de l’incertitude et de la rencontre avec quelque chose à la fois de familier et d’étranger. Le troisième chapitre se concentre sur l’angoisse refoulée, liée à la peur du mariage et de la sexualité.
