Tłumaczenie metafor w poezji Sylvii Plath

Głównym celem pracy było przedstawienie sposobów tłumaczenia metafor kognitywnych w poezji Sylvii Plath. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów.W pierwszym rozdziale zaprezentowana została teoria dotycząca tłumaczenia poezji. W rozdziale przedstawione są różne definicje poezji i rola jej tłumacza. Tłumaczenie jest przedstawione jako proces komunikacji, a w kolejnych sekcjach opisane jest użycie języka w tłumaczeniach poezji i możliwe trudności i zadania stojące przed jej tłumaczami.Teorie dotyczące metafor i ich tłumaczenia zostały opisane w drugim rozdziale. Rozdział rozpoczyna się od prezentacji poglądów na język głoszonych przez strukturalistów i kognitywistów. Ponadto autorka pracy opisuje istniejące definicje metafor, łącznie z metaforami kognitywnymi, i wymienia strategie ich tłumaczenia.W trzecim rozdziale pracy przedstawione są rezultaty analizy przekładów metafor w wybranych wierszach Sylvii Plath. Rozdział rozpoczyna się od opisu charakterystycznych cech poezji Plath. Wyniki analizy są uporządkowane w kategoriach odpowiadających metaforom w tekście źródłowym: metafory strukturalne, ontologiczne, orientacyjne i personifikacje. Ostatni rozdział zawiera wnioski w których wyniki analizy zostały połączone z teoriami zawartymi w obu rozdziałach teoretycznych.

The main aim of this study was to illustrate translations of conceptual metaphors in Sylvia Plath’s poems. The study is divided into three chapters.In the first chapter, theory regarding poetry translation is presented. The chapter starts with definitions of poetry. In consecutive sections, poetry translator’s role is explained. Apart from that, poetry translation is discussed in terms of communication process, the use of language in poetry translations and possible difficulties and challenges which may occur in the process of transferring poems from source to target languages. Theories on metaphors and metaphors in translation are included in the second chapter of this study. It starts with the presentation of structuralist and cognitivist views on language. What is more, the author discusses definitions of metaphors, including conceptual metaphors, and lists different strategies of their translation. The third chapter includes the analysis of metaphor translation in selected Sylvia Plath’s poems. In introductory sections, characteristics of Sylvia Plath’s works are described. The outcomes of the analysis are grouped according to categories of metaphors identified in the analysis: structural, ontological, orientational metaphors and personifications. The last chapter includes conclusions in which the results of the analysis are summed up with the use of theories from both theoretical chapters.
