The world of druids in the eyes of the romantics. Celtic culture in Lilla Weneda by Juliusz Słowacki and Norma by Vincenzo Bellini

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytania o źródła fascynacji kulturą celtycką romantyków, które ujawniają się w dramacie Juliusza Słowackiego "Lilla Weneda" oraz w operze "Norma" Vincenzo Belliniego. Praca została podzielona na trzy części. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia romantyczne spojrzenie na strukturę społeczną Celtów, kulturę, sztukę oraz religię. Ukazuje również z jakich elementów celtyckiej kultury korzystali romantyczni twórcy zarysowując w didaskaliach scenografię. Rozdział drugi zawiera portrety bohaterów obu dzieł, rozważane z perspektywy ról społecznych jakie pełnią w swojej społeczności. Pojawia się tu zatem postać władcy, druida, wieszczki oraz wojownika. Rozdział trzeci pozwala spojrzeć na celtyckich bohaterów poprzez ich relacji rodzinne i ukazuje jak zostały one zniekształcone przez wojnę i role, które bohaterowie odgrywają w społeczności. Zwieńczeniem pracy będzie próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, o powód odnoszenia się do kultury celtyckiej przez romantyków i o wpływ tej kultury na kreowanych przez nich bohaterów.

The main subject of the following dissertation is an endeavor to find the answers to the question of the source of fascination in the Celtic culture of the authors of Romanticism, which unveil in the drama "Lilla Weneda" by Juliusz Słowacki and in the opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini. The thesis has been divided into three different chapters. The first part focuses on the vision of the social structure, culture, art and religion of Celts, as they were perceived by the authors. In addition it specifies the components of the Celtic culture, which have been used by the authors of Romanticism to describe the scenography in the stage directions. The second chapter depicts the characters from both of the aforementioned works, with their defined social roles – the ruler, the druid, the seeress and the warrior. The third and the last part offers an insight into the familial relationships of the heroes and the distortion of these relations caused by the horror of the war and by the responsibilities of their particular social roles. The culmination of the thesis is an attempt to answer the question of the reason why the authors of Romanticism referred to the Celtic culture and to show the influence of the culture on the creation of the characters from aforementioned works.
