Benjamin – Aragon: The Mechanisms of Contradiction: Materialism and Surrealism

Artykuł zestawia sposoby konfrontowania surrealizmu z materializmem zaproponowane przez Waltera Benjamina oraz Louisa Aragona. Analizie poddany został korpus tekstów Benjamina poświęconych Aragonowi i szerzej — całemu francuskiemu ruchowi surrealistycznemu. Wypowiedzi te zestawiono z dziełami samego Aragona. Zarówno dla teorii Benjamina, jak i dla twórczości Aragona istotne jest napięcie pomiędzy surrealizmem a marksizmem, kluczowe również w powojennej (zwłaszcza lewicowej) historiografii surrealizmu. Dzięki zaproponowanemu porównaniu ukazano analogiczne gesty radykalnego oddzielania od siebie dzieł Aragona z okresu surrealistycznego i realistycznego oraz pism Benjamina sprzed 1929 roku i po nim. Zwrócono uwagę, że takie cięcia pojawiały się zarówno w recepcji, jak i w wypowiedziach samych Benjamina i Aragona. W artykule zaproponowano przekroczenie tej narracji — poprzez rekonstrukcję stanowisk Benjamina wobec surrealizmu i nieciągłości w obrębie Benjaminowskich prób rewizji marksizmu. Dzięki zestawieniu tych rewizji z przemianami estetycznego programu Aragona ujawniają się (sięgające poza ramy surrealizmu) zakotwiczenia myśli Benjamina, zwłaszcza w kontekście jego krytyki ortodoksji.

The article compares the ways of confronting surrealism with materialism proposed by Walter Benjamin and Louis Aragon. The corpus of Benjamin’s texts devoted to Aragon and, more broadly, the entire French surrealist movement was analysed. These statements were juxtaposed with the works of Aragon himself. For both Benjamin’s theory and Aragon’s work, the tension between surrealism and Marxism is significant, which is also key in the postwar, especially leftist, historiography of surrealism. Thanks to the proposed comparison, the analogy between the gestures of radically separating Aragon’s surrealist and realist periods and Benjamin’s writings before and after 1929 was revealed. Attention was drawn to the fact that such divisions appeared both in the reception and in the statements of Benjamin and Aragon themselves. The article proposes transcending this narrative — through a reconstruction of Benjamin’s positions toward surrealism and the discontinuities within Benjamin’s attempts to revise Marxism. By comparing these revisions with the transformations of Aragon’s aesthetic program, the article reveals crucial points of Benjamin’s thought (going beyond the frames of surrealism), especially in the context of his critique of orthodoxy.
