The process of translating gay men's language into Polish as based on Alan Hollinghurst's "The line of beauty"

W artykule autorka skupia się na analizie tłumaczenia powieściowego języka gejów na język polski na przykładzie powieści The Line of Beauty Alana Hollinghursta. Oprócz kontekstu społeczno-kulturowego opisane zostały również historia społeczności homoseksualnej w Polsce i krajach anglojęzycznych oraz stan badań na temat języka gejów. Cechy slangu gejowskiego, które obserwujemy w powieści, to elementy języka kobiet, inwersja rodzaju gramatycznego oraz specjalne słownictwo. Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza technik używanych przez tłumacza w związku z zachowaniem slangu gejowskiego w przekładzie oraz zmian, które zaszły w tłumaczeniach względem tekstu oryginalnego. Autorka wykazała, że slang gejowski w polskim przekładzie został znacznie uproszczony, gdyż jest on mniej rozbudowany w porównaniu ze slangiem angielskim.

The paper analyses literary translation of gayspeak. It focuses on the Polish translation of Alan Hollinghurst‘s The Line of Beauty. The history and socio-cultural background of homosexuals in Poland and selected English-speaking countries as well as research carried out to date are mentioned. The features of gay slang presented in the novel are elements of female language, grammatical gender inversion and specific vocabulary. The main purpose of the paper is to analyse the techniques applied by translators in order to maintain gayspeak and to describe how, compared to the original, the target text has been changed. The analysis shows that gayspeak in the Polish translation of the novel is simplified compared to the original text. It is a direct consequence of Polish gayspeak being less complex than English gayspeak.
