Celem pracy magisterskiej pt. „The Awakening i The Custom of the Country: perspektywa feministyczna” jest omówienie dzieł autorstwa Kate Chopin oraz Edith Wharton ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zagadnień związanych z emancypacją kobiet. Główne bohaterki tych powieści wyróżniają się feministycznym pragnieniem wolności osobistej w patriarchalnym społeczeństwie. Zamierzeniem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie The Awakening oraz The Custom of the Country jako nowatorskich powieści zgłębiających temat feminizmu i prezentujących pragnienia związane z równym traktowaniem bez względu na płeć. Pod koniec dziewiętnastego i na początku dwudziestego wieku w społeczeństwie patriarchalnym, kobieta istniała tylko w relacjach do innych: jako córka, żona, matka, czyli jako podmiot pośredni, zdefiniowany poprzez swoje relacje do mężczyzny, który był właściwym podmiotem prawa i życia społecznego. This dissertation analyzes Kate Chopin’s The Awakening and Edith Wharton’s The Custom of the Country from a feminist perspective. Incontrovertibly, both novels, illustrating their heroines in an endeavor to ideologically spurn the social norms and conventions, fundamentally share the universal feminist yearning for personal freedom within a patriarchal society and the criticism of upper-class mores. The overarching aim of this project is to depict these novels as the seminal works exploring the themes of feminism and women’s desire to liberate themselves. Placed in an invidious position within a patriarchal society at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, women were regarded as the lesser gender compared to males. Consequently, women devoted a great deal of effort to change their status. Both Edna Pontellier and Undine Spragg’s struggles to change their lives are pertinent examples of predicaments faced by women. For a better comprehension of women’s fight for their rights, this disquisition presents a scrupulous delineation of three waves of feminism with considerable emphasis placed on ecofeminism. By the framework of the waves of the feminist movement, this work argues that women’s activism had a substantial impact on the themes and styles of writing adopted by Kate Chopin and Edith Wharton. Their perspicacity and writing prowess greatly influenced their works which then were perceived as the fundamental texts exploring women’s endeavors to eradicate social inequity. This study is motivated by three research questions: How a feminist perspective influenced Kate Chopin and Edith Wharton’s novels? How their personal experience is imprinted in the protagonists’ traits? How disparate styles of writing influenced the reception of The Awakening and The Custom of the Country? To examine these questions this dissertation explores biographies of Chopin and Wharton to elucidate how their valiant attempts to discuss the delicate subject of women’s struggles appear to arise from the authors’ personal experiences. Moreover, The Awakening is depicted as belonging to a consciousness-raising genre. Kate Chopin’s use of numerous euphemisms and metaphors to create a double-edged discourse while describing woman’s social, sexual, and spiritual awakening attracted public opprobrium, therefore critical response to the novel was abundant. In contrast, more favourable reviews of The Custom of the Country are attributable to the use of the muted language while perpetuating a negative portrait of the upper-class New York society, marriage and divorce.In short, this study advances one’s understanding of women’s struggles for equality and it enables readers to understand the shared experiences of the authors and their protagonists, which greatly enhances the authenticity and value of both novels. A joint reading of The Awakening and The Custom of the Country from a feminist perspective reveals a laudable and daring undertaking of the authors who applied their personal experiences in fashioning their protagonists so as to describe the status of women in a patriarchal society more meticulously and reliably.
