Psychological autopsy as a forensic science method – an attempt to reconstruct the psychological profile of the deceased and the causes of their death

Celem pracy jest charakterystyka autopsji psychologicznej jako metody ekspertyzy psychologicznej wykorzystywanej w analizie przypadków nagłych zgonów, co do których zachodzi podejrzenie samobójczego charakteru śmierci. W pracy został dokonany przegląd i opis poszczególnych elementów tej metody oraz wykorzystywanych w ramach jej stosowania źródeł informacji, takich jak m.in wywiad psychologiczny, analiza progresji suicydalnej, listu pożegnalnego, czynników osobowościowych i społecznych wpływających na sytuację życiową denata oraz metody samobójczej. Przedstawiony został proces odtwarzania sylwetki psychologicznej osoby zmarłej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wykorzystywanych w ramach ekspertyzy narzędzi psychologicznych i kryminalistycznych. W pracy podjęto próbę rekonstrukcji podłoża teoretycznego autopsji psychologicznej, poszukując założeń, koncepcji i kierunków badań na bazie których rozwijano poszczególne jej aspekty. Uwzględniono także próby standaryzacji tej metody, z wyszczególnieniem trzech modeli jej stosowania. W odniesieniu do autopsji psychologicznej, zaprezentowany został opis zjawiska samobójstwa, jego cech i występowania w Polsce, jak również kryminalistyczna problematyka pozorowania zgonów samobójczych. W pracy przedstawiono wybrane aspekty prawnokarnej analizy śmierci samobójczej, w tym wykorzystanie autopsji psychologicznej jako opinii biegłego w postępowaniu karnym. W ramach kompleksowej charakterystyki tej metody oraz jej poszczególnych elementów, analizie poddano pojawiające się na przestrzeni lat zmiany w jej praktycznym zastosowaniu oraz kierunki rozwoju.

The goal of this study is to characterize the psychological autopsy as a method of psychological analysis of sudden death cases, where a suspicion of the suicidal nature of death occurs. The thesis includes a review and a description of various method’s elements, as well as the sources of information used in its application, such as psychological interview, analysis of suicidal progression, suicidal note, suicide method, personality and social factors influencing the life situation of the deceased. The process of reconstruction of the psychological profile of the deceased and their mental state is presented, with particular emphasis on the psychological and forensic science techniques used in this method. The study attempts to reconstruct the theoretical basis of psychological autopsy, looking for the assumptions, concepts and directions of research which formed the basis of development of its individual aspects. The thesis includes a description of attempts to standardize the method, by analyzing the examples of three models of its application. With regard to the psychological autopsy, the description of the phenomenon of suicide, its features and occurrence in Poland is also presented. The thesis presents selected aspects of the criminal law analysis of suicidal death including the use of the psychological autopsy as an expert opinion in criminal procedure and forensic issue of suicide deaths mystification. As the part of comprehensive description of the psychological autopsy and its individual elements, the thesis provides an analysis of the changes of the method’s practical application and development that have appeared over the years.
