Odzwierciedlanie wyrazistości i neologizmów w Limes inferior Janusza A. Zajdla: tłumaczenie wybranych fragmentów z komentarzem

W projekcie przedstawione jest moje autorskie tłumaczenie wybranych fragmentów powieści Limes inferior Janusza A. Zajdla wydanej w 1982 roku. Powieść kryje w sobie antykomunistyczne przesłanie wpisujące się w kontekst historyczny Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej, prorocze wizje współczesności (np. wypieranie gotówki przez karty płatnicze), formę narracji charakterystyczną dla fantastyki socjologicznej, liczne neologizmy słowotwórcze i znaczeniowe, a także anglicyzmy, które w przekładzie na język angielski tracą swoją wyrazistość. W pracy przedstawiono biografię autora, listę jego najważniejszych publikacji oraz źródła jego inspiracji. Ponadto praca zawiera kompleksowe badanie tła powieści, w tym analizę jej struktury narracyjnej i strategii zastosowanych przez autora, a także omówienie aktualnego stanu komercjalizacji ideologii komunistycznej. Pokrótce przeanalizowano również ramy teoretyczne mojego tłumaczenia. Składają się na nie procedury tłumaczeniowe skonceptualizowane przez Eugene’a Nidę oraz tendencje deformacyjne opisane przez Antoine’a Bermana. W pracy przedstawiono również pięć kategorii zagadnień, które pojawiły się w trakcie realizacji mojego projektu: tłumaczenie wyrazistości (anglicyzmów), tłumaczenie neologizmów, tłumaczenie nazw własnych, tłumaczenie kontekstu oraz tłumaczenie dialogów. W pracy obecne są także krótkie omówienia innych przykładów wykraczających poza zakres wybranych fragmentów. Zwieńczeniem mojej pracy jest przetłumaczony tekst skonstruowany w formie dwujęzycznej tabeli zawierającej proponowane przeze mnie tłumaczenie wraz z komentarzami do niektórych zwrotów, terminów czy wątków, które zostały zawarte w adnotacjach. Celem rozprawy jest ukazanie problemów, przed którymi staje tłumacz decydujący się na przetłumaczenie całej powieści, oraz zaproponowanie konkretnych narzędzi do rozwiązania poszczególnych problemów.

The project presents my translation of selected excerpts from the 1982 novel Limes inferior by Janusz A. Zajdel. His book is recognisable for its implicit anti-communist message that aligns with the Polish historical context of the Polish People’s Republic, the prophetic visions of modern-day life (e.g. the displacement of cash in favour of payment cards), the narrative form characteristic of sociological fiction, the numerous formative and semantic neologisms, and the Anglicisms, which lose their markedness in translation into English. The paper provides a biography of the author, a list of his most significant publications, and an account of the sources of his inspiration. Furthermore, the paper includes a comprehensive examination of the novel’s background, including an analysis of its narrative structure and the strategies employed by the author. The work also offers an overview of the current commercialisation of communist ideology. The theoretical framework guiding my translation is also briefly examined. The framework is comprised of the translation procedures conceptualised by Eugene Nida and the deforming tendencies coined by Antoine Berman. Moreover, the paper provides five categories of the issues that arose during the completion of my project: translation of markedness (Anglicisms), translation of neologisms, translation of names, translation of underlying context and translation of dialogues. Brief discussions of other examples beyond the scope of the selected excerpts are also included. The culmination of my work consists of the translated text constructed in the form of a bilingual table that contains my proposed translation, along with my comments on certain phrases, terms or themes, which are included in the annotations. The aim of the paper is to show the issues that are faced by the translator deciding to translate the novel as a whole and propose specific solutions and strategies.
