An Asian as a Source of Peril. Reconstruction of the Image of Indians and Chinese in the British Literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th Century
Azjaci Indusi Chińczycy imperializm zagrożenie
The aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century image born in the British Empire, which showed Asians as people who didn’t accept British system of politics, law or values and who, consequently, could be seen as a very serious source of peril. The author of this thesis decided to concentrate on analyzing Victorian adventurous fiction, since it was one of the most popular literature types at that time as well as one of the main sources of entertainment and information for the British people. The literary image of Asians is represented by habitants of India and China, whose countries were treated as a priority in British Empire’s conquest and exploitive politics. A portrait of those countries’ citizens can be found in some of the most popular novels from the turn of the centuries, among whose authors were Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, Matthew Phipps Shiel, George Manville Fenn and Joseph Conrad.Since this thesis is based on the historical and literary analysis, Chapter One refers to the British-Indian and British-Chinese relations’ evolution. Understanding wide historical context is absolutely crucial in order to comprehend how the British were forming their politics towards Asians and how some of the negative stereotypes about the East were born. Moreover, the author emphasizes the meaning of Victorian literature, its influence on the British people’s mentality and, consequently, its role in spreading and strengthening Asia’s unfavorable image in the West. Chapter two consists of detailed analysis of Asians’ literary image. The author concentrates mostly on those elements and features which are supposed to make Indians and Chinese cruel, ruthless and dangerous not only for the British living in the East, but also for the global imperial order established by Great Britain. The aim of the last part of this thesis is to do a comparative analysis of the Indian and Chinese people’s image. Having compared all of the elements of Asian people’s thinking and behavior showed in Victorian novels, the author reconstructs the image of dangerous Asians. Moreover, she also proofs that there is a distinct connection between literary picture of Asia and historical events, including imperial politics of Great Britain. Although the main aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the Victorian era’s image of Asians, the analysis may also lead to better comprehension of some historical processes as well as to understanding the fact, that some psychological and cultural elements such as stereotypes and prejudices are often purposely created or used in order to build and strengthen some ideology or political system. Therefore, this thesis may help to explain how the image of people representing other culture or race is created, as well as to make us understand, that some of our contemporary imaginations about Asia have their origin in colonial period.
