Mia Couto – Sleepwalking Land, Ben Okri – The Famished Road. In the world of stories

W pracy omawiam kwestię funkcji opowieści w dziełach Lunatyczna kraina Mii Couto oraz Droga bez dna Bena Okriego. Przedstawiam analizę porównawczą „opowiadania” występującego jako motyw fabularny, akt narracji, a także kluczowy punkt biografii bohaterów żyjących w traumatycznej wojennej i tuż powojennej rzeczywistości krajów afrykańskich. Opowiadanie będąc nieodłącznym elementem kultury i tradycji, istnieje w świadomości bohaterów jako naturalny środek ekspresji i komunikacji, jednak specyfika tej trudnej rzeczywistości – zdewastowanej i koszmarnej, nadaje mu nowe znaczenia. Rozpoczynając od przedstawienia spornego zagadnienia dotyczącego klasyfikacji gatunkowej powieści – to jest ich przynależności do nurtu realizmu magicznego lub realizmu animistycznego, poprzez refleksję nad sposobami odzwierciedlania i kreowania rzeczywistości za pomocą przeplatających się opowieści, snów i marzeń, skupiam się na analizie wybranych opowieści bohaterów obu utworów.

The thesis examines the role of stories in the works of Mia Couto Sleepwalking Land and Ben Okri The Famished Road. It includes the comparative analysis of “stories” appearing as a feature motif, narrative act, and as a key point in the biographies of protagonists, who happen to live in the traumatic war and post-war reality of the African countries. As an integral part of culture and tradition, story-telling exists in the protagonists’ conscious as a natural medium of expression and communication. In the light of such difficult reality – dreadful and devastated – it acquires a whole new meaning. The main focus of the following thesis is the analysis of selected stories, starting from the presentation of the disputable notion concerning the genre classification of novels, i.e. their belonging to the magical realism and animistic realism, and touching upon different ways of reflecting and creating reality through stories, dreams and fantasies.
