Preventive censorship of newspapers, from Gierek to the Round Table

Tematem pracy jest cenzura prasy funkcjonująca od czasu rządów I Sekretarza KC PZPR Edwarda Gierka do obrad Okrągłego Stołu. Peerelowskie władze na czele z Polską Zjednoczoną Partią Robotniczą, do kształtowania rzeczywistości za pomocą słowa pisanego wykorzystywały cenzurę prewencyjną oraz represyjną. Prewencja polegała na sprawdzeniu zgodności zawartych treści w materiale, jeszcze przed jego publikacją, tym samym nie dopuszczając do rozpowszechnienia informacji niewygodnych dla władzy. Autorka opisuje sposób kształtowania się cenzury i organów kontroli w pierwszej połowie XX w, prawne aspekty funkcjonowania Głównego Urzędu Kontroli Prasy Publikacji i Widowisk, działalność podziemnych pism drugiego obiegu oraz wpływ "Soidarnośći" w walce o wolność słowa.

The theme of the work is press censorship functioning since Edward Gierek's government in the seventies to the Round Table. Poland's communist authorities slong with the Labor Party tried to shape reality by controlling written word. It was done by using preventive and repressive censorship. Prevention was to check the compliance of the content in the material, even before its publication, thus preventing the dissemination of information uncomfortable for the authorities. The author describes the evolution of censorship and control bodies in the first half of the twentieth century, the legal aspects of functioning of the Central Office for Control of the Press, Publications and Public Performances, activities frrom underground samizdat writings and the impact of "Soidarność” movement in the struggle for freedom of speech.
