At the crossroads. On the trivialization of fabric and textile processes in the landscape of historical reconstruction of the Middle Ages

Praca prezentuje zjawisko rekonstrukcji historycznej wieków średnich z perspektywy antropologii doświadczenia i zwrotu ku rzeczom. Autorka jako badaczka, a zarazem rekonstruktorka, kieruje swoją uwagę w stronę bliskiego sobie krajobrazu, lecz niedostrzeganego dotąd jego elementu. Rzemiosło codzienne, związane z produkcją tkanin i ubioru, przez swoją niezbędność i uniwersalność utożsamiane jest w rekonstrukcji historycznej z powszechnością i trywialnością, także pod względem niezbędnych umiejętności rzemieślniczych koniecznych do zajmowania się nim. Proces trywializacji (łac. trivium – rozstaje, potrójne rozdroże) tkanin ma swoją genezę w wielu dylematach rekonstruktorów i rzemieślników. W pracy wyszczególniono trzy podstawowe rozdroża z nimi związane, sięgając po makro perspektywę rekonstrukcji historycznych, mezo-krajobraz targowisk średniowiecznych oraz mikro-problematykę jednostkowych praktyk rzemieślniczych i zbliżenie ku materiałowi. Studium poświęcone zostało szczególnie praktykom rekonstruktorek-rękodzielniczek, które zajmują się wysokiej jakości rekonstrukcją tekstyliów w oparciu o wzorce historyczne, w tym zapisy i znaleziska archeologiczne, historiograficzne i etnograficzne, a także ikonografie z okresu wczesnego, pełnego i późnego średniowiecza. Marginalizowane działania prządek, tkaczek, barwierek i krawcowych, zajmujących się ręczną produkcją rekonstrukcji rzeczy, zbadano poprzez ucieleśnione poznanie przedmiotów w procesie od strony ich materiału i materialności. Wyszczególniono uwikłanie praktyk w: ciągłości i zmiany technik, metod, narzędzi i surowców, przepływy przestrzenne i jednostkowe wybory taktyk oraz afektywne uwikłanie pracy kobiecej. Finalnie praca zyskała wartość jako opowieść obustronna – o przedmiotach i o osobach, które starają się być niczym edukatorskie kierunkowskazy, prezentujące alternatywną praktykę odtwórczą w niezwykle heterogenicznym środowisku, znajdującym się pomiędzy przeszłością i teraźniejszością, wiedzą i niewiedzą na temat szczątkowych źródeł, świadomością i jej brakiem na temat rzemieślniczych praktyk oraz wytwarzania przedmiotów.

The Master thesis presents the phenomenon of historical reconstruction of the Middle Ages from the perspective of the anthropology of experience and the turn towards things. The author, as a researcher and at the same time a reconstructor, directs her attention towards a landscape that is close to her, but an element of it that has so far been overlooked. Everyday craft related to the production of fabrics and clothing, due to its indispensability and universality, is identified in historical reconstruction with commonness and triviality, also in terms of the necessary craft skills necessary to deal with it. The process of trivialization (lat. trivium – crossroads, triple crossroads) of fabrics has its genesis in many dilemmas of reenactors and craftsmen. The work lists three basic crossroads related to them, reaching for the macro perspective of historical reconstructions, the meso-landscape of medieval marketplaces and the micro-issues of individual craft practices and approaching the material. The study was devoted in particular to the practices of handicraft reenactors who deal with high-quality reconstruction of textiles based on historical patterns, including archaeological, historiographic and ethnographic records and finds, as well as iconographies from the early, high and late Middle Ages. The marginalized activities of the spinners, weavers, dyers and dressmakers involved in the manual production of reconstructed things were examined through the embodied cognition of objects in process from the point of view of their material and materiality. The entanglement of practices in: continuity and change of techniques, methods, tools and raw materials, spatial flows and individual choices of tactics as well as the affective entanglement of women's work were specified. Ultimately, the work gained value as a two-sided story – about objects and people who try to be like educational signposts, presenting an alternative re-creative practice in an extremely heterogeneous environment, located between the past and the present, knowledge and ignorance about residual sources, consciousness and its lack on about craft practices and crafting.
