About Exhibiting Fashion in a Museum. An Interpretation of Andrew Bolton's Curatorial Projects

Niniejsza praca magisterska została poświęcona działalności kuratorskiej Andrew Boltona w Costume Institute będącym częścią Metropolitan Museum of Art w Nowym Jorku. W odrębnych rozdziałach znalazły się analizy i interpretacje wystaw: Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between (2017), About Time: Fashion and Duration (2020-2021), In America: An Anthology of Fashion (2022). W opracowaniu każdej z tych realizacji uwzględniono zarówno formalną stronę jej aranżacji, jak i pełny zbiór komentarzy kuratorskich. Jak wykazano, wymienione powyżej prace Andrew Boltona wypełniały założenia trzech zróżnicowanych modeli wystawienniczych typowych dla ekspozycji: monograficznej, historycznej i problemowej. Całość rozważań zakończono wnioskiem dotyczącym zasług kuratora dla rozwoju współczesnego muzealnictwa związanego z modą.

This master's thesis is devoted to Andrew Bolton's curatorial activities at the Costume Institute, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Separate chapters include analyses and interpretations of the exhibitions: Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between (2017), About Time: Fashion and Duration (2020-2021), In America: An Anthology of Fashion (2022). The study of each of these realisations took into account both the formal side of its arrangement and the full set of curatorial comments. As shown, the above-mentioned works by Andrew Bolton fulfilled the assumptions of three different exhibition models typical for exhibitions: monographic, historical and problem-based. The entire considerations ended with a conclusion regarding the curator's contributions to the development of contemporary fashion-related museology.
