Aspects of the linguistic view on gender issues in American and Polish cultures based on the analysis of the original and the Polish translation of "Why men love bitches" - a handbook by Sherry Argov

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest ciesząca się wśród językoznawców niesłabnącym zainteresowaniem koncepcja językowego obrazu świata. W części teoretycznej przestawione zostały między innymi podstawowe założenia i pochodzenie koncepcji JOS oraz opis idei pokrewnych, które miały wpływ na jej rozwój. Znaleźć można w niej również krótki wstęp do tematu analizy przeprowadzonej na potrzeby niniejszej pracy oraz opis wykorzystanych w tym celu narzędzi badawczych językoznawstwa kognitywnego.Głównym założeniem części analitycznej było zbadanie treści należących do dyskursu typowo potocznego przy użyciu systematycznych narzędzi badawczych. Tematem analizy stały się fragmenty oryginału i tłumaczenia popularnego, napisanego przez amerykańską autorkę Sherry Argov, kobiecego poradnika o intymnych relacjach damsko-męskich, w Polsce znanego pod tytułem „Dlaczego mężczyźni kochają zołzy”. Wyciągnięte wnioski dotyczą wybranych aspektów językowego obrazu płci w kulturze polskiej i amerykańskiej oraz podobieństw pomiędzy tymi dwoma kulturami.

The core topic of this master dissertation is the conception of linguistic worldview that has been holding the attention of linguists recently. The theoretical piece of this dissertation includes a description of the basic assumptions and the origin of the linguistic worldview conception as well as an overview of the related theories that have influenced it. What is also covered in this part is a brief introduction to the subject of the analysis conducted for the purpose of this dissertation as well as a description of the cognitive linguistics research tools that were used.The main aim of the research piece is to analyze popular discourse content by using methodical research tools. The subject of the conducted analysis is the original and the Polish translation of a popular women’s handbook about intimate relationships between women and men written by Sherry Argov, a popular American writer. The English title of the handbook is “Why men love bitches”. The conclusions drawn are about certain aspects of the linguistic view on gender issues in American and Polish cultures as well as the similarities between these two cultures.
