Buna and Buna Qalaa: coffee ceremonies in Ethiopia

Praca pt. „Buna i Buna Qalaa: ceremonie kawy w Etiopii” skupia się na przedstawieniu tytułowych rytów i wykazaniu ich powiązań z religią i sytuacją społeczną Etiopii. Aby opisać je i nakreślić występujące połączenia z metaforyczną, kulturową i społeczną sferą, tekst korzysta z dotychczasowego dorobku zagranicznych badaczy, zajmujących się etiopskimi ceremoniałami związanymi z kawą. Celem pracy jest nie tylko ukazanie przebiegu i konotacji podanych rytów. Ze względu na niewielką ilość informacji o ceremoniach kawy, dostępnych w języku polskim, tekst ma za zadanie również przedstawienie podanych zjawisk w Polsce i zwrócenie uwagi środowiska naukowego na występowanie i znaczenie tych tradycji. Praca przedstawia historię i legendy związane z odkryciem i wykorzystaniem kawy w Etiopii, a następnie wykazuje jej połączenie z tradycją ludności Oromo oraz ze zwyczajami występującymi na terenie całego kraju. Poprzez analizę ceremonii Buna i Buna Qalaa wyprowadzone zostają wnioski o znaczeniu kawy w przeszłości i w teraźniejszości, podkreślając jej wykorzystanie przez wyznawców tradycyjnej religii Oromo, Waaqeffanna, podczas rytu Buna Qalaa. Kawa związana jest również z próbami radzenia sobie z problemami społecznymi, jak wykazuje tekst, podając przykład ceremonii Buna, powstałej aby kobiety mogły na czas jej odprawiania uwolnić się od trudności związanych z patriarchatem Etiopii. Wnioski uzyskane z przeprowadzonej analizy ukazują kawę jako element kultury, który łączy ze sobą liczne grupy etniczne zamieszkujące ten kraj i jest podstawą utworzenia etiopskiej tożsamości narodowej.

The thesis entitled "Buna and Buna Qalaa: coffee ceremonies in Ethiopia" focuses on presenting the eponymous rites and demonstrating their links with the religious and social situation in Ethiopia. In order to describe them and outline the existing connections with the metaphorical, cultural and social sphere, this paper uses the previous achievements of foreign researchers investigating Ethiopian ceremonies related to coffee. The thesis presents the history and legends associated with the discovery and use of coffee in Ethiopia, and then shows its connections with the tradition of the Oromo people and customs present throughout the country. This thesis aims to not only show the course and connotations of the chosen rites. Due to the small amount of information about coffee ceremonies available in Polish language, the paper is also intended to present the phenomena and draw the attention of the polish scientific community to the occurrence and importance of these traditions. Through the analysis of the Buna and Buna Qalaa ceremonies, conclusions are drawn about the importance of coffee in the past and in the present, emphasizing its use by the followers of the traditional Oromo religion, Waaqeffanna, during the Buna Qalaa rite. Coffee is also associated with the attempts to deal with social problems, as the paper shows, based on the example of the Buna ceremony, created for women to free themselves for a short time from the difficulties associated with the patriarchal system in Ethiopia. The conclusions of the analysis show that coffee as an element of culture brings together numerous ethnic groups inhabiting this country and is the core of the creation of the Ethiopian national identity.
