Main characters' perception of the world and relations with their surroundings, in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and Jeonghui Oh’s The Bird

Niniejsza praca dotyczy porównania percepcji świata oraz relacji z otoczeniem głównych bohaterek powieści Harper Lee Zabić drozda oraz Oh Jeonghui Ptak – Jean Louise Finch oraz U-mi Park. Opisany zostaje stosunek Zachodu do dorobku literackiego Dalekiego Wschodu, historia literatury koreańskiej oraz potrzeba prowadzenia nad nią badań naukowych, szczególnie poprzez porównywanie jej do literatury zachodniej. Następnie zostają ze sobą zestawione osiągnięcia literackie dwóch autorek pochodzących z całkowicie odmiennych kulturowo narodów: amerykańskiej pisarki Harper Lee oraz południowokoreańskiej autorki Oh Jeonghui. Analiza powieści obu pisarek przedstawia sposób narracji w utworach, podobieństwa oraz różnice w kreacji głównych bohaterek, ich emocje, relacje z rodziną, rówieśnikami, sąsiadami, społeczeństwem

This paper is a comparison of main female characters' (Jean Louise Finch and U-mi Park) perception of the world and relations with their surroundings, in Harper Lee's To kill a Mockingbird and Jeonghui Oh’s The Bird. The attitude of the West toward litarary works of the Far East are described, along with the history of Korean literature and the need of conducting research on it, especially by means of comparison to Western literature. Consecutively, literary achievements of both writers, who come from totally different nations in terms of their culture: American writer Harper Lee and South Korean writer Oh Jeonghui, are juxtaposed. Novels' analysis of both writers depicts types of narration in their works, similarities and differences in main characters' creations, their emotions, relations with family, peers, neighbours, society.
