Powerful Ottoman Sultanas based on the Yilmaz Çetiner's novel Haremde bir Venedikli: Nurbanu Sultan

W niniejszej pracy magisterskiej autorka podejmuje próbę przedstawienia sylwetek trzech sułtanek, żyjących w tzw. „złotym wieku Imperium Osmańskiego”, które szczególnie zapisały się na kartach historii Turcji. Źródłem inspiracji stała się powieść historyczna Haremde Bir Venedikli: Nurbanu Sultan, [Wenecjanka w haremie: Sułtanka Nurbanu] tureckiego dziennikarza, Yılmaza Çetinera. Książka określona przez samego autora jako tarihi belgesel roman [powieść historyczna z elementami prozy dokumentalnej], jest próbą połączenia ze sobą narracji opartej na faktach historycznych z wplecionymi i pojawiającymi się tylko w części rozdziałów dialogami bohaterów. Çetiner opowiedział znaczący fragment dziejów Imperium – rozpoczynając od panowania Sulejmana I Wspaniałego, a kończąc na Muradzie III – przy czym skoncentrował się przede wszystkim na żonach sułtanów, z których uczynił główne bohaterki rozgrywających się wydarzeń. Praca ta ma również za zadanie przybliżenie epoki „złotego wieku” w państwie Osmanów, poprzez ukazanie wizerunków nie tylko władczych kobiet, ale także pozostałych członków rodziny sułtańskiej z padyszachem na czele. Jednakże, zmierzenie się z tą dość obszerną i złożoną tematyką wiąże się, siłą rzeczy, z selekcją i wybraniem tych bardziej kluczowych, a zarazem ciekawszych wątków. W pierwszym rozdziale, zaprezentowana została krótka biografia Çetinera. Rozdział drugi, przybliża nieco tło historyczne, skupiając się na poszczególnych postaciach i ilustrując życie na dworze osmańskim. W osobnych częściach przedstawiono dokładne opisy trzech sułtanek: Nurbanu, Hürrem i Safiye. Korzystając ze szczegółowych pozycji naukowych i wielu opracowań, autorka stara się omówić ich życie, działalność i wpływ na politykę kraju. Ostatni rozdział stanowi zarys przyciągającego uwagę wielu historyków okresu zwanego „sułtanatem kobiet”, w którym to despotyczne sułtanki uzyskiwały realny i bardzo znaczący wpływ na władzę w Imperium. W zakończeniu autorka podsumowuje omówione zagadnienia i dzieli się własnymi przemyśleniami nad rolą sułtanek, które wzięły czynny udział w kształtowaniu przyszłości swojego państwa.

In this thesis author tries to describe profiles of three sultanas, living in the "Golden age of the Ottoman Empire," which particularly engraved in history of Turkey. The source of inspiration became a historical novel Haremde Bir Venedikli: Nurbanu Sultan, written by a Turkish journalist, Yilmaz Çetiner.The book which is described by its author as a tarihi belgesel roman [historical novel with elements of documentary prose], is an attempt to link the narration based on historical facts with dialogues of the characters which appears only in some parts of chapters. Çetiner told a significant period of the history of the Ottoman Empire - starting from the reign of Suleiman I the Magnificent, and ending with the Murad III - being focused primarily on the wives of the sultans, who were playing the main characters during that time.This work is made also to familiarize the era of the "golden age" in the State of the Ottomans, by showing images of not only powerful women, but also other members of the sultan's family. However, the deal with this fairly extensive and complex subject matter involves, inevitably, the selection and choosing those more critical, yet more interesting topics.In the first chapter, there is a short biography of Çetiner. The second chapter, brings a little historical background, focusing on individual characters and illustrating life in the Ottoman palace. In separate sections there are detailed descriptions of the three sultanas: Nurbanu, Hürrem and Safiye. Using very detailed scientific books and many historical studies, author attempts to discuss their lives, activities and impact on the country's politics. The last chapter gives an overview of an attractive topic for many historians of the period called the "Sultanate of Women", in which the despotic sultanas have gained real and very significant impact on the control of the Empire. In conclusion, the author summarizes the issues discussed and shares his own thoughts on the role of sultanas, who took an active part in shaping the future of the Ottoman Empire.
