Diseases and views on their treatment in the sphere of the Christian culture of Europe and the Muslim Middle East from the 10th to the 15th century

Tematem niniejszej pracy są wybrane choroby dotykające ludzi w okresie od X do XV wieku, rozwój medycyny na przestrzeni dziejów, a także podejście do chorób i sposobów ich leczenia przez słynnych przedstawicieli sztuki lekarskiej. Pierwszy rozdział skupia się na okresie starożytności, zahaczającej lekko o prehistorię, a kończy na początku pełnego średniowiecza. Opisane w nim zostały początki medycyny oraz jej rozwój, który dokonał się na przestrzeni wieków. Rozdział opowiada o medycynie w takich regionach jak starożytny Wschód i Egipt, a także antyczna Grecja i Rzym. Drugi rozdział skupia się na samych chorobach i ich leczeniu. Opisane zostały tam zarówno największe choroby okresu średniowiecza jak np. dżuma, ale też wspominano tam o mniej znanych, bardziej pospolitych chorobach oraz takich ciekawych schorzeniach jak np. taneczna plaga. Każda z chorób opisana została na tej samej zasadzie: przedstawiono jej objawy i wpływ na człowieka, sposoby leczenia oraz skutki - zarówno zdrowotne jak i te społeczne oraz gospodarcze. Trzeci rozdział opisuje podejście do wszelakich chorób i problemów zdrowotnych słynnych osobistości powiązanych z medycyną. W rozdziale zostały przeanalizowane takie dzieła jak np. jak Causae et Curae Hildegardy z Bingen, Kompendium medycyny naturalnej Piotra Hiszpana czy też Księga pouczających przykładów Usamy ibn Munkidha.

The subject of this work is selected diseases affecting people in the period from the 10th to the 15th century, the development of medicine throughout history, as well as the approach to diseases and methods of their treatment by famous representatives of medical art. The first chapter focuses on the period of antiquity, slightly touching on prehistory, and ends at the beginning of the full Middle Ages. It describes the beginnings of medicine and its development over the centuries. The chapter is about medicine in regions such as the Ancient East and Egypt, as well as ancient Greece and Rome. The second chapter focuses on the diseases themselves and their treatment. It describes both the greatest diseases of the Middle Ages, such as the Black Death, but also mentions less known, more common diseases and such interesting diseases as, for example, the dancing plague. Each disease is described in the same way: its symptoms and impact on humans, methods of treatment and effects - both health, social and economic - are presented. The third chapter describes the approach to all kinds of diseases and health problems of famous personalities associated with medicine. The chapter analyzes such works as, for example Causae et Curae by Hildegard of Bingen, the Compendium of Natural Medicine by Peter of Spain or the Book of instructive examples of Usama ibn Munkidha.
