Analysis of the film "Forrest Gump" based on the patterns and concepts of fairy tales

Poniższa praca „Analiza filmu ‘Forrest Gump’ w oparciu o wzorce i koncepcje baśni” podejmuje tematykę gatunku literackiego baśni, konkretnie kwestię zasad jej definiowania oraz uwzględnia analizę dzieła filmowego „Forrest Gump” reżyserii Roberta Zemericka z 1994 roku, na podstawie wcześniej wyznaczonego zbioru głównych cech charakterystycznych dla gatunku baśni. Hipotezą badawczą niniejszej pracy było: Film „Forrest Gump” (1994) może być rozpatrywany jako baśń, natomiast głównym problemem badawczym niniejszej pracy było: czy film „Forrest Gump” może być rozpatrywany jako baśń? Innym problem badawczym było: czym jest baśń i jakie cechy charakterystyczne posiada?Praca składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej poruszona została kwestia problemu definicji gatunku baśni oraz różnych sposobów jej klasyfikacji, na podstawie opracowań i źródeł wtórnych. Ponadto zostały one poddane analizie w celu uzyskania zbioru rozpoznawalnych cech baśni. W drugiej części, została przeprowadzona analiza źródła pierwotnego, czyli filmu, w oparciu o ustalony zbiór cech baśni, jak również samodzielną interpretację elementów dzieła, w celu odszukania adekwatnej ilości argumentów popierających hipotezę. W trzeciej części, film ponownie został przeanalizowany, tym razem w celu znalezienia argumentów podważających hipotezę badawczą. Do napisania pracy wykorzystano literaturę fachową, głównie dotyczącą literaturoznawstwa i kulturoznawstwa. Metodą badawcza zastosowaną w pracy była analiza tekstów omawiających tematykę baśni i jej klasyfikacji oraz samego filmu. Natomiast technikę badawczą stanowiło: przeanalizowanie źródeł wtórnych, w celu uzyskania zbioru rozpoznawalnych cech baśni, jak i analiza oraz interpretacja aspektów dzieła filmowego, na podstawie powyższego zbioru. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy wykazano, że ponieważ film „Forrest Gump” posiada on dostateczną ilość baśniowych cech charakterystycznych, może on być rozpatrywany jako baśń. Poruszona została również kwestia uniwersalności baśni, jak i jej relacji ze społeczeństwem.

The following thesis "Analysis of the film 'Forrest Gump' based on the Patterns and Concepts of Fairy Tales" addresses the literary genre of fairy tales, specifically the question of the rules of its definition, and includes an analysis of the 1994 film work "Forrest Gump" directed by Robert Zemerick, based on a predetermined set of main characteristics of the fairy tale genre. The research hypothesis of the present work was: The film "Forrest Gump" (1994) can be considered a fairy tale, while the main research problem of this study was: can the film "Forrest Gump" be considered a fairy tale? Another research problem was: what is a fairy tale and what are its main characteristics?The work consists of three parts. The first addresses the problem of defining the fairy tale genre and the various ways of its classification, based on studies and secondary sources. In addition, they were examined in order to obtain a set of distinguishable characteristics of fairy tales. The second section, analyzed the primary source, the film, based on the established set of characteristics of the fairy tale, as well as an individual interpretation of the elements of the artwork, in order to find an adequate number of arguments supporting the hypothesis. In the third section, the film was again analyzed, this time to find arguments that undermine the hypothesis of this thesis.The literature used to compose the thesis was mainly literary and cultural studies. The research method used in this study was the analysis of texts discussing the subject of fairy tales and their classification, as well as the film itself. In turn, the research technique was: analyzing secondary sources, in order to obtain a set of recognizable characteristics of fairy tales, as well as analyzing and interpreting aspects of the film, based on the previously mentioned set of characteristics.Based on the conducted analysis, it was shown that because the film "Forrest Gump" has enough fairy tale characteristics, it can be considered a fairy tale. The subject of the universality of the fairy tale, as well as its relation to society, was also brought up.
