EU funds and their importance for regional development using the example of Lesser Poland Voivodeship

Przesłaniem podjętej pracy było ukazanie roli funduszy unijnych w aspekcie rozwoju regionalnego. W pracy skoncentrowano się na analizie wybranego regionu – Podhala, pod kątem realizowanych inwestycji z udziałem wsparcia ze strony funduszy unijnych. W tym celu przeprowadzono sondaż diagnostyczny wśród mieszkańców Podhala oraz dokonano analizy własnej wybranych działań inwestycyjnych w badanym regionie. W toku analizy badawczej ujawniono, że w opinii ankietowanych fundusze unijne stanowią ważne źródło wsparcia inwestycji realizowanych w regionie – 62%, które dodatkowo pozwalają na podniesienie innowacyjności regionu. W regionie Podhala inwestycje współfinansowane ze środków unijnych realizowane są w różnych obszarach, warunkujących poziom atrakcyjności regionu i jego rozwój tj. w obszarze dziedzictwa kulturowego, digitalizacji, infrastruktury drogowej oraz inwestycje w kapitał ludzki. Wsparcie z funduszy strukturalnych stanowiło istotne źródło współfinansowania prowadzonych inwestycji na Podhali, które wynosiło od 9% do nawet 85% łącznej wartości realizowanych programów.

The message of the work was to show the role of EU funds in the aspect of regional development. The work focuses on the analysis of a selected region – Podhale – in terms of implemented investments carried out with the support of EU funds. For this purpose, a diagnostic survey was conducted among the inhabitants of Podhale and an own analysis of selected investment activities in the studied region was made. In the course of the research analysis, it was revealed that in the opinion of the respondents, EU funds are an important source of support for investments carried out in the region – 62%, which additionally allow to increase the innovativeness of the region. In the Podhale region, investments co-financed by EU funds are implemented in various areas, determining the level of attractiveness of the region and its development, i.e. in the field of cultural heritage, digitisation, road infrastructure and investments in human capital. Support from the Structural Funds was an important source of co-financing for the investments carried out in Podhale, ranging from 9% to even 85% of the total value of the implemented programs.
