Lolitas as an example of emancipation transgressions among Japanese women. An analysis of factors affecting the subculture’s formation.

Japonia jest krajem obfitującym w wiele barwnych (sub)kultur modowych. Dzielnica Harajuku stała się kolebką dla wielu społeczności prezentujących własny oryginalny styl, w tym subkultury lolit, będących przedmiotem niniejszej pracy. Lolity doskonale łączą bogactwo detali, dziewczęcość i elegancję z estetyką kawaii i niewinnym wyglądem, jednak ich strój jest czymś więcej niż formą ozdoby. Praca ma na celu udowodnić, że wygląd lolity jest pewnego rodzaju manifestem, za pomocą którego członkinie tej subkultury wyrażają swojej poglądy i wartości oraz buntują się przeciw tradycyjnym rolom płci i normom społecznym. Przynależność do subkultury i działania w jej obrębie są formą poszerzania wolności osobistej członkiń i, jako takie, mogą być traktowane jako rodzaj transgresji emancypacyjnej. Autorka skupia się na wyszczególnieniu poszczególnych kategorii lolit oraz charakterystyce i interpretacji niektórych elementów ich stroju, a także analizie czynników, które doprowadziły do powstania subkultury oraz kształtują ją w dalszym ciągu.

Japan is a country which abounds in many vivid fashion (sub)cultures. Harajuku district became the cradle of many communities presenting their own original style, including lolita subculture – a subject of this thesis. Lolitas perfectly combine the richness of details, girlishness and elegance with the kawaii aesthetics and innocent appearance, but their outfit is more than a form of decoration. The purpose of the thesis is to prove that the lolita’s look is a kind of manifesto through which they can express their views and values, and rebel against traditional gender roles and social norms. Belonging to the subculture and acting within it is a form of broadening the personal freedom of its members and therefore, can be treated as a kind of emancipation transgression. The author focuses on the specification of the lolita categories, and the characterization and interpretation of some elements of her outfit, as well as the analysis of the factors that led to the creation of the lolita subculture and still have a huge impact on it.
