Formal and Stylistic Analysis of Images of Animals from Europe in the Upper Paleolithic Period

Niniejsza praca licencjacka poświęcona jest zagadnieniu wizerunków zwierząt pochodzących z okresu górnego paleolitu z terenów Europy. Celem pracy była próba wykazania wszechstronności sztuki omawianego okresu oraz analiza dotychczasowych ustaleń badaczy w zakresie interpretacji przytaczanych w niniejszej pracy przykładów. Punkt wyjścia stanowi omówienie historii oraz stanu badań poruszających problematykę paleolitycznych wyobrażeń zwierząt. Następnie przedstawiona została baza źródłowa dotycząca wybranych przez autorkę stanowisk archeologicznych z wizerunkami zwierząt, która podzielona została na podrozdziały wyróżnione na podstawie techniki wykonania - malowidła, wyobrażenia trójwymiarowe, ryty oraz płaskorzeźby. W rozdziale trzecim przeprowadzona została analiza formalno-stylistyczna wybranych wizerunków zwierząt skupiająca się na aspektach technicznych, artystycznych czy kontekstowych. W pracy nakreślony został związek między formą a symboliką przedstawień zwierząt powstałych w omawianym okresie. Końcowa część pracy skupia się na określeniu stosowności używania terminu "sztuka" w odniesieniu do wyrobów z okresu górnego paleolitu, co pozwoliło na podsumowanie wniosków płynących z przeprowadzonej w pracy analizy formalno-stylistycznej oraz odniesienie do różnorodności nurtów interpretacyjnych w badaniach nad sztuką górnego paleolitu.

The topic of this thesis are images of animals from the Upper Paleolithic period in Europe. The main goal of this work is an attempt to demonstrate the versatility of the art of this period and analysis of the researchers' findings in terms of the interpretation of the examples cited in this work. The starting point outlines the history and state of of research dealing with the problem of palaeolithic images of animals. Then, the source database of the archaeological sites selected by the author with images of animals was presented, which was divided into subsections distinguished on the basis of the technique of execution - paintings, three-dimensional images, carvings and reliefs. In the third chapter, a formal and stylistic analysis of selected animals' images was carried out, focusing on technical, artistic and contextual aspects. The work outlines the relationship between the form and the symbolism of representations of animals created during the discussed period. The final part of the work focuses on determining the appropriateness of using the term "art" in relation to products from the Upper Palaeolithic period, which allowed to summarize the conclusions of the formal and stylistic analysis carried out in the work and to refer to the diversity of interpretative trends in research on upper Palaeolithic art.
