Depiction of shamanism on the example of cuchimilcos figurines from the Chancay culture.

Uważa się, że przedstawienia figuralne w Ameryce Południowej odgrywały istotną rolę w społeczeństwach prekolumbijskich. Niemniej jednak brak źródeł pisanych, które umożliwiłyby jednoznaczną identyfikację i określenie funkcji danych przedmiotów, w znaczącym stopniu utrudnia rozpoznanie ich przeznaczenia. Jedną z takich form są cuchimilcos – figurki o różnych wielkościach, znajdowane w kontekstach grobowych kultury Chancay. Celem niniejszej pracy jest opracowanie zestawu figurek pochodzących z kolekcji Museo de Ancón i Museo Larco oraz przyporządkowanie ich do przedstawień ukazujących postaci szamanów/szamanek. W ramach wspomnianego celu określono cechy charakterystyczne figurek (pozycja stojąca z wyciągniętymi do góry ramionami, mimika twarzy, nakrycie głowy, „rękawice”, malowane lub tatuowane twarze, „koszule”, a także krzyżujące się pasy na ciele) oraz przypisano je do przedmiotów bądź czynności wykonywanych przez przedstawicieli/przedstawicielki wspomnianej grupy magiczno-religijnej.

Representation of figures in South America are believed to have played an important role in pre-Columbian societies. Nevertheless, the lack of written sources that would make it possible to unequivocally identify and define the functions of given items significantly hampers the recognition of their purpose. One such form is cuchimilcos - figurines of various sizes found in the funerary contexts of the Chancay culture. The aim of this work is to develop a set of figurines from the Museo de Ancón and Museo Larco collections and to assign them to representations of shamans / shamaness’. As part of the aforementioned objective, the characteristic features of the figures (standing position with outstretched arms, facial expressions, headgear, "gloves", painted or tattooed faces, "shirts", as well as crossing stripes on the body) were determined and assigned to objects or activities performed by representatives of the aforementioned magical-religious group.
