A comparative analysis of the novel “Perfume” by Patrick Süskind and its film adaptation

Powyższa praca ma na celu przedstawienie oraz omówienie powieści Patricka Süskinda "Das Parfum", a także porównanie oryginału literackiego z jego filmową adaptacją, wyreżyserowanej przez Toma Tykwera. W pierwszym rozdziale opisany został cel pracy. Następnie przedstawiona została krótka biografia autora książki. Rozdział trzeci zawiera krótki opis epoki literackiej, do której zaklasyfikowana jest powieść Das Parfum. W następnym rozdziale opisane jest krótka biografia reżysera ekranizacji Das Parfum, Toma Tykwera. W części teoretycznej uwaga skupia się na pojęciu ekranizacji, a także na rodzajach adaptacji filmowych. Następnie przedstawione są trudności, które towarzyszą zmianie medium literackiego na medium filmowe, jakimi są intermedialność oraz wierność oryginałowi. Część analityczna pracy magisterskiej podzielona jest na trzy rozdziały. Rozdział siódmy skupiony jest na powieści. Przedstawione jest krótkie streszczenie fabuły książki, omówione zostają możliwości sklasyfikowania powieści jako powieść wielu gatunków, następnie omówione zostają recenzje napisane przez krytyków literackich. Ostatni podrozdział traktuje o stylu oraz metodach narracji w powieści. W rozdziale ósmym opisana zostaje historia powstania ekranizacji, sposób narracji filmowej, a także jej odbiór przez krytyków filmowych. Rozdział dziewiąty skupia się na analizie oraz porównaniu obydwu utworów, zarówno ich podobieństw jak i różnic. Analizowane pod kątem różnic są nie tylko powieść oraz ekranizacja, ale także okładka książki oraz plakat filmowy. Następnie przedstawione są sceny oraz postacie, które nie zostały uwzględnione w ekranizacji. Kolejny podrozdział skupia się na dalszych różnicach między powieścią, a ekranizacją.

This thesis aims to present and analyze Patrick Süskind's novel ‘Perfume’ and to compare the original literary work with the film adaptation directed by Tom Tykwer. The first chapter describes the purpose of the thesis, while a brief biography of Patrick Süskind, the author, follows this introduction. The third chapter briefly describes the literary period to which the novel can be categorized. The next chapter contains a short biography of the director of the film version of Perfume, Tom Tykwer. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the general concept of film adaptations and the different types of cinematic adaptation. This is followed by a description of the difficulties that accompany the change from the literary to the cinematic medium, namely intermediality and faithfulness to the original. The analytical part of the thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter seven, which deals with the novel, provides a brief summary of the book's plot, the possibilities of categorising the novel as a multi-genre novel are discussed, followed by a presentation of the reviews written by literary critics. Within this chapter, the last sub-chapter, 7.4, deals with the language and narrative stylings of the novel. The eighth chapter describes the genesis of the aforementioned film adaptation, the method of film narration, and the reception of it by film critics. Lastly, the ninth chapter seeks to analyze and compare the two works, looking at both their similarities and their differences. Not only are the novel and the film adaptation analysed for their differences, but also the book cover and the film poster. Scenes and characters that are not included in the film version are then presented, as the next section further examines and compares the differences between the original text and the film adaptation.

Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, Patrick Süskinds Roman “Das Parfum” vorzustellen und zu analysieren sowie die literarische Vorlage mit der Verfilmung unter der Regie von Tom Tykwer zu vergleichen. Das erste Kapitel beschreibt den Zweck der Arbeit. Danach folgt eine kurze Biographie des Autors. Das dritte Kapitel enthält eine kurze Beschreibung der literarischen Epoche, in die der Roman einzuordnen ist. Im nächsten Kapitel wird eine Kurzbiographie des Regisseurs der Verfilmung von Das Parfum, Tom Tykwer, beschrieben. Im theoretischen Teil liegt der Schwerpunkt auf dem allgemeinen Konzept von Verfilmungen sowie auf den verschiedenen Arten der filmischen Adaption. Es folgt eine Darstellung der Schwierigkeiten, die den Wechsel vom literarischen zum filmischen Medium begleiten, nämlich Intermedialität und Werktreue. Der analytische Teil der Arbeit ist in drei Kapitel aufgeteilt. Kapitel sieben befasst sich mit dem Roman. Es wird eine kurze Zusammenfassung der Handlung des Buches gegeben, die Möglichkeiten der Einordnung des Romans als Mehrgattungsroman werden erörtert, gefolgt von einer Darstellung der von der Literaturkritik verfassten Rezensionen. Das letzte Unterkapitel befasst sich mit Stil und Erzählweise des Romans. Das achte Kapitel beschreibt die Entstehungsgeschichte der Verfilmung, die Methode der Filmnarration und Rezeption der Verfilmung durch die Filmkritiker. Das neunte Kapitel befasst sich mit der Analyse und dem Vergleich der beiden Werke, sowohl mit ihren Gemeinsamkeiten als auch mit ihren Unterschieden. Nicht nur der Roman und die Verfilmung werden auf ihre Unterschiede hin analysiert, sondern auch das Buchcover und das Filmplakat. Anschließend werden Szenen und Figuren vorgestellt, die in der Verfilmung nicht enthalten sind. Der nächste Teil befasst sich mit weiteren Unterschieden zwischen dem Roman und der Verfilmung.
