Operation "Iron": course and repercussions

Operacja "Żelazo" (1968-1971) jest jedną z największych afer polskiego wywiadu komunistycznego. W jej trakcie na terenie Europy Zachodniej dokonano zaboru mienia o wartości ok. 2,8 mln marek niemieckich. Następnie natomiast - po przemycie do Polski - większość łupu zaginęła w niewyjaśnionych okolicznościach. W tej pracy staram się prześledzić genezę, przebieg oraz reperkusje operacji. Staram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie o charakter powiązań między Służbą Bezpieczeństwa a wykonującymi kombinację gangsterami. Próbuję także opisać stosowane metody. Zastanawiam się także, co właściwie stało się ze zrabowanymi dobrami. Pod koniec opisuję wpływ jaki cała operacja miała na los gen. Mirosława Milewskiego - przywódcy stronnictwa "twardogłowych" w PZPR oraz wykonujących operację agentów.

Operation "Iron" (1968-1971) is one of the biggest scandals of Polish communist intelligence. During the mission, there were appropriated goods worth approximately 2,8 million Deutschmarks in Western Europe. Then – after smuggling to Poland – a vast majority of the loot disappeared in mysterious circumstances. The main aim of this work is to reconstruct the genesis, course and repercussions of this operation. I try to understand the nature of the connection between the Security Service and the gangsters that conducted the operation. I also describe the methods they used. I ask a question about what actually happened to the looted goods. And finally, I describe the influence that the operation had on the fate of Gen. Miroslaw Milewski - the leader of the hard-liners in the Polish United Workers' Party - and the agents that conducted the operation.
