The influence of whole-body cryotherapy on the functional efficiency of patients with lumbar spine osteoarthritis

Wstęp: Choroba zwyrodnieniowa kręgosłupa to przewlekłe, degeneracyjne schorzenie, o charakterze postępującym, powstające w wyniku zużycia tkanek tworzących połączenia kręgów. Objawia się m.in bólem, obrzękiem, sztywnością stawów międzykręgowych oraz występowaniem osteofitów. Jedną z metod leczenia zachowawczego choroby zwyrodnieniowej kręgosłupa jest krioterapia ogólnoustrojowa, która wykazuje działanie przeciwbólowe, obniża napięcie mięśniowe oraz wspomaga zwiększenie ruchomości stawów kręgosłupa. Cel pracy: Celem pracy była ocena wpływu krioterapii ogólnoustrojowej na sprawność funkcjonalną pacjentów z chorobą zwyrodnieniową kręgosłupa lędźwiowego. Materiał i metody: Badaną grupę stanowiło 30 pacjentów ze zdiagnozowaną chorobą zwyrodnieniową kręgosłupa w odcinku lędźwiowym. W pierwszym dniu turnusu pacjenci wypełnili ankietę składającą się z autorskich pytań oraz wybranych z kwestionariusza Rolanda i Morrisa. Dokonano pomiarów zakresów ruchomości kręgosłupa w zgięciu oraz wyproście, a także oceniono stopień intensywności bólu za pomocą skali VAS. Pacjenci zostali poddani serii 10 zabiegów krioterapii ogólnoustrojowej. Badania powtórzono w ostatnim dniu turnusu. Wyniki: Wykazano istotny statystycznie wzrost w zakresie zgięcia oraz wyprostu kręgosłupa lędźwiowego po serii 10 zabiegów w kriokomorze. Intensywność bólu ocenianego w skali VAS zmniejszyła się istotnie po krioterapii w porównaniu z pierwszym dniem turnusu. Nie zaobserwowano statystycznie istotnego związku między BMI osób zmagających się z chorobą zwyrodnieniową kręgosłupa lędźwiowego, a stopniem odczuwania przez nie bólu. Wnioski: Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na to, iż zastosowanie krioterapii ogólnoustrojowej wpływa na wzrost sprawności funkcjonalnej pacjentów cierpiących na chorobę zwyrodnieniową kręgosłupa lędźwiowego poprzez zwiększenie zakresu zgięcia i wyprostu kręgosłupa oraz zmniejszenie dolegliwości bólowych.

Introduction: Osteoarthritis of the spine is a chronic, degenerative disease of a progressive nature, resulting from the wear and tear of the tissues forming the joints of the vertebrae. It manifests e.g. pain, swelling, stiffness of the intervertebral joints and the presence of osteophytes. One of the methods of conservative treatment of osteoarthritis of the spine is whole-body cryotherapy, which has an analgesic effect, reduces muscle tension and helps to increase the mobility of the spine joints. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the impact of whole-body cryotherapy on the functional efficiency of patients with degenerative disease of the lumbar spine. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 30 patients diagnosed with degenerative disease of the lumbar spine. At the beginning of the therapy, patients completed a questionnaire consisting of original questions and questions selected from the Roland and Morris questionnaire. The range of motion of the spine in flexion and extension was measured, and the degree of pain intensity was assessed using the VAS scale. The patients underwent a series of 10 whole-body cryotherapy treatments. The tests were repeated on the last day of therapy. Results: Statistically significant increase in flexion and extension of the lumbar spine after 10 treatments in the cryochamber was demonstrated. The intensity of pain assessed on the VAS scale decreased significantly compared to the first day of therapy. There was no statistically significant relationship between the BMI of people struggling with degenerative disease of the lumbar spine and the degree of pain they felt. Conclusions: The obtained results indicate that the use of whole-body cryotherapy increases the functional efficiency of patients suffering from degenerative disease of the lumbar spine by increasing the range of flexion and extension of the spine and reducing pain.
