Nazwy własne w polskich przekładach Hobbita i Władcy Pierścieni J.R.R. Tolkiena.

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest porównanie różnych sposobów tłumaczenia powieści pod tytułem Hobbit, czyli tam i z powrotem oraz Władca Pierścieni J.R.R. Tolkiena z uwzględnieniem interpretacji i zrozumienia nazw własnych występujących w wymienionych książkach. W rozdziale pierwszym opisałam wpływy na twórczość J.R.R. Tolkiena, takie jak literatura, kultura i doświadczenia, a także skupiłam się na recepcji twórczości autora w Wielkiej Brytanii, Stanach Zjednoczonych i Polsce. Rozdział drugi dotyczy teorii przekładu, a dokładniej domestykacji i forenizacji według Lawrence’a Venutiego, pojęć ekwiwalencji zaproponowanych przez Eugene’a Nidę i Romana Jakobsona, a także komunikatywnej i semantycznej metody tłumaczenia przedstawionej przez Petera Newmarka. Dodatkowo uwzględniłam problem nieprzekładalności, zysków i strat w procesie tłumaczenia oraz przekładu nazw własnych. Dalsza część pracy porównuje tłumaczenia nazw własnych w powieściach pt. Hobbit, czyli tam i z powrotem oraz Władca Pierścieni: Drużyna Pierścienia. Zestawiłam ze sobą fragmenty powieści przetłumaczone przez Marię Skibniewską, Andrzeja Polkowskiego i Jerzego Łozińskiego, które zostały wybrane przeze mnie na podstawie opinii krytyków, recenzentów i społeczności fanów. Wyniki mojej analizy wskazują, że tłumacz powinien zapoznać się z kulturą i językiem, które zostały stworzone przez autora, by stworzyć tekst zrozumiały dla czytelnika. Brak takiego działania może prowadzić do braku aprobaty wśród grupy docelowej.

The topic of the thesis is the comparison of different approaches taken by different translators of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with regard to the interpretation and understanding of the proper nouns which can be found in the Tolkien’s works. The first part of the thesis focuses on J.R.R. Tolkien’s influences, such as literature, culture and experiences, as well as the reception of his works in the United Kingdom, the USA and Poland. The second chapter concentrates on translation theories, such as the theory of domestication and foreignisation by Lawrence Venuti, theories of equivalence introduced by Eugene Nida and Roman Jakobson, and also Peter Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation. It also discusses the issue of untranslatability, as well as the problem of loss and gain and the translation of proper names. The thesis then focuses on the on the brief comparison of selected Polish translations of proper nouns and proper names in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I have chosen particular passages from the original texts and compared them to Polish translations by Maria Skibniewska, Andrzej Polkowski and Jerzy Łoziński in accordance to the opinions given by the community of fans, as well as the reviewers and critics. In conclusion, the thesis argues that a translator should remain faithful to the original text. This thesis also states that a translator is often required to become acquainted with the culture and language that have been created by the author in order to produce a text which is understandable for the reader, and the failure in doing so might result in a disapproval among the target audience.
