Merlin’s metamorphoses in a few narrative texts of the Middle Ages.

Praca ma na celu zidentyfikowanie zmian tematycznych dotyczących postaci Merlina w czterech tekstach średniowiecznych: Merlin Roberta de Boron, anonimowych Lancelot du Lac, La Suite du Roman de Merlin oraz Le Morte d’Arthur Thomasa Malory’ego. Analiza podzielona jest na trzy części: każda opisuje inny okres w życiu literackim Merlina (dzieciństwo, dorosłość oraz koniec życia). Doszukujemy się najważniejszych cech i funkcji Merlina oraz porównujemy zmieniające się zworce w celu stworzenia syntezy przemian, jakim poddany jest bohater w Średniowieczu.

The paper strives to identify and map different thematic variations in the character of Merlin in four medieval texts: Merlin by Robert de Boron, Lancelot du Lac, La Suite du Roman de Merlin and Le Morte d’Arthur by Thomas Malory. The analysis is divided into three parts: each describing a different period in the literary life of Merlin (childhood, adulthood and the end of life). The primary characteristics and roles of Merlin in the texts are identified and the changing patterns are compared to create a synthesis of the metamorphoses that the character undergoes in the Middle Ages.

Le travail a pour objet d’identifier le jeu de variantes qui s’applique qu personnage de Merlin dans quatre textes médiévaux : Merlin de Robert de Boron, Lancelot du Lac, La Suite du Roman de Merlin et Le Morte d’Arthur de Thomas Malory. L’analyse est divisée en trois parties : chacune décrit une autre période de la vie littéraire de Merlin (l’enfance, l’âge adulte, la fin de la vie). Nous discernons les traits et les fonctions primordiaux de Merlin et comparons les variantes comprises dans les textes pour en déduire une synthèse des métamorphoses que le personnage en question subit au Moyen Age.
