The focus of this study is the analysis of the stances of Russian citizens towards the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict that began on 24 February 2022. It will focus on two categories: Russian citizens residing in the country and the Russian diaspora living in the states of the Baltic region. The authors aim to answer several essential questions: (1) Is non-violent behaviour possible under an oppressive state? (2) If yes, what forms can it take? (3) Can the citizens of an oppressive state, such as that which Russia turned into after 2000, oppose aggression against themselves and their neighbours? (4) Can publicly expressed social resistance lead to developing peaceful ways of ending the conflict? The analysis used the mutually complementary categorisations of Gene Sharp (2013), which distinguishes 198 types of civil disobedience, and that of Mirosław Karwat (2004). The research structure created on this foundation made it possible to locate civil disobedience attitudes within a hybrid form of dictatorship, called by Guriev and Treisman (2023) a ‘fear and spin dictatorship’, with which we have been dealing in Russia since 2012.
