Cultural encounters and conflicts in James Clavell’s Shōgun and its 2024 television adaptation

Celem pracy była analiza zderzenia Wschodu z Zachodem oraz w jaki sposób zmieniała się narracja i perspektywa kulturowa w kontekście przemian społecznych, kulturowych i medialnych, jakie zaszły na świecie od momentu wydania książki Jamesa Clavella "Shogun" aż do pojawienia się w 2024 jej serialowej ekranizacji. Głównym problem badawczym była próba odpowiedzi na pytania, w jaki sposób adaptacja telewizyjna Shogun z 2024 zmienia narrację i perpsektywę kulturową w porównaniu do powieści Jamesa Clavella oraz jak zmiany w przedstawieniu postaci, języka i wartości odzwierciedlają współczesne podejście do tematu reprezentacji kulturowej i historycznej. Postawiono hipotezę, że nowa adaptacja poszerza japońską perspektywę, przywraca postaciom kobiecym podmiotowość, realistycznie ukazuje barierę językową oraz rezygnuje z orientalizacji i uproszczeń przedstawianych w powieści Clavella. Analiza opierała się na porównaniu treści powieści i serialu, uwzględniając zarówno kontekst historyczny, jak i różnice w konstrukcji fabualrnej, językowej oraz sposobie przedstawienia bohaterów. Zastosowano metodę analizy porównawczej. Wnioski z przeprowadzonej analizy potwierdziły postawioną hipotezę. Nowa adaptacja odchodzi od orientalistycznej perspektywy powieści, kładąc nacisk na autentyczność doświadczenia międzykulturowego.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the clash between East and West and how the narrative and cultural perspective changed in the context of the social, cultural and media changes that took place in the world from the publication of James Clavell's book Shogun until the appearance of its serialized adaptation in 2024. The main research problem was an attempt to answer the questions of how the 2024 TV adaptation of Shogun changes the narrative and cultural perpsectivity compared to James Clavell's novel, and how changes in the representation of characters, language and values reflect contemporary approaches to the topic of cultural and historical representation. It was hypothesized that the new adaptation broadens the Japanese perspective, restores subjectivity to female characters, realistically portrays the language barrier, and abandons the orientalization and simplification depicted in Clavell's novel. The analysis was based on a comparison of the content of the novel and the TV series, taking into account both the historical context and the differences in plot construction, language and the way the characters are portrayed. The method of comparative analysis was applied. The conclusions of the analysis confirmed the hypothesis. The new adaptation departs from the orientalist perspective of the novel, emphasizing the authenticity of the intercultural experience.
