The charm of the 90s. ‘bruLion’ and Ładnie Group vs transformation

Lata dziewięćdziesiąte w Polsce to czas diametralnych zmian, które nie ominęły także polskiej kultury. Artyści stanęli przed trudnym wyborem: zanegowaniem albo wykorzystaniem ustrojowych przemian. W mojej pracy przyglądam się dwóm formacjom artystycznym, które wybrały drugą opcję – „bruLionowi” i Grupie Ładnie. Na ich przykładzie próbuję pokazać specyfikę polskiej kultury lat dziewięćdziesiątych, kierujące nią mechanizmy oraz próby walczenia z nimi. Aby je uporządkować, wyróżniam kilka zjawisk, które nazywam strategiami lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Obok „bruLionu” i Grupy Ładnie istotnym bohaterem moich badań jest Kraków – miejsce działań obu grup, uważany za centrum kultury najntisów. Zasadniczym celem niniejszej pracy jest pokazanie nierozerwalnego związku „bruLionu” i Grupy Ładnie z transformacją ustrojową w Polsce.

The 90s in Poland were the time of fundamental changes that Polish culture couldn’t avoid either. Polish artists were faced with a difficult choice: to negate this new reality or to accept and take advantage of it. In my study I analyse the evolution of two artistic formations that have chosen the second option: ‘bruLion’ and Grupa Ładnie (Ładnie Group). Based on these examples, I tried to show the specificity of Polish 90s culture, its control mechanisms and the attempts of fighting them. To put everything in the order, I distinguished several phenomena called ‘the strategies of the 90s’. Besides ‘bruLion’ and Grupa Ładnie, it is Cracow that becomes an important hero of my research as a place of action for both groups and a city considered a cultural center of the 90s. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to underline the inextricable link between those groups of artists and the political transformation in Poland.
