The image of Provence in view of language of Marcel Pagnol.

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona ukazaniu Prowansji poprzez język pisarza francuskiego Marcela Pagnol. W pierwszej części przedstawione zostały zagadnienia teoretyczne i metodologiczne, a następnie przedstawiono analizę i opis języka używanego przez różne klasy społeczne na południu Francji. Aspekt socjolingwistyczny dotyczy bowiem wszystkich języków oraz wpływa na nie w sposób szczególny. Do przeprowadzenia poniższej analizy wyselekcjonowano cztery tomy „Wspomnień z dzieciństwa” pióra Marcela Pagnola: „Chwała mego ojca”, „Zamek mojej matki”, „Czas tajemnic” oraz „Czas miłości”. Publikacja dwóch pierwszych woluminów miała miejsce w 1956 roku. Następnie, by móc przystąpić do dogłębnej analizy wypowiedzi przedstawicieli różnych klas społecznych posłużono się kilkoma słownikami w celu wyodrębnienia wszystkich terminów uznawanych za regionalne. Kolejnym etapem było ukazanie różnic składniowych, fonetycznych i fonologicznych. Dalsza część została poświęconya analizie czynników pozajęzykowych takich jak kontekst, stratyfikacja społeczeństwa, płeć, wiek, zawód, poziom wykształcenia oraz miejsce zamieszkania. Na końcu przedstawiono rezultaty niniejszej pracy wskazujące na to, że obraz wspomnianego regionu i jego mieszkańców pozostaje silnie związany z tożsamością południowo-francuską. Południe Francji charakteryzuje się zatem żywiołowością, miłością do fauny i flory, towarzyskością jak i zaangażowaniem we wzajemnych kontaktach. Wywodzący się z różnych warstw społecznych mieszkańcy Prowansji są zawsze przedstawieni w sposób przyjacielski, uprzejmy, sympatyczny oraz nacechowany odwagą i przywiązaniem do pracy. Niniejsza praca pozwoliła ukazać, iż duża różnorodność pochodzeniowa grupy osób i ich zachowań werbalnych tworzą różnice w użyciu języka. Obraz pięknej Prowansji jak i tożsamości prowansalskiej jest głęboko związany z językiem, zachowaniami oraz kulturą i rzeczywistością południowo-francuską.

The aim of this thesis is to show the image of Provence in view of language of Marcel Pagnol. The study begins with the presentation of the theoretical and methodological aspects, then goes on to present the analysis and the description of speeches of different social classes in the South of France. As far as the sociolinguistic side is one of the essential aspects in every language, it influences it in a very particular way. We have chosen four volumes of Marcel Pagnol’s “Memories of Childhood” : “My Father's Glory”, “My Mother's Castle”, “The Time of Secrets” and “The Time of Love”, of which the oldest one goes back to 1956. Then we used several dictionaries, to extract from our corpus all regional terms. Next we attempted to discover what the distinguishing syntactical, phonetic and phonological features were. The next step was devoted to the study of extralinguistic factors such as the context, the social status and the standard of living, the sex, the age, the profession, the education level and the location. Furthermore, what emerges from our analysis is that the image of the region and of its inhabitants is deeply attached to Southern identity. The South of France reflects its vivacity, love for fauna and flora, sociability as well as the sense of reciprocity. The inhabitants, whatever their social status is, are presented in a kind, polite ant pleasant way with their sense for work. Not only did this thesis enabled us to discover that the language differences have their origins in the heterogeneity of the group and of its language comportments, but also that in the same time the image of beautiful Provence and of the Provençal identity are deeply connected with the language and all of its components as well as with the culture and the Southern reality.

Le présent travail a pour but de montrer l’image de la Provence vue à travers la langue de Marcel Pagnol. Il commence par la présentation des notions théoriques et méthodologiques avant de passer à l’analyse et la description du parler des différentes couches sociales de Midi de la France. Étant l’un des aspects essentiels du langage, le côté sociolinguistique est présent dans toutes les langues et les influence d’une manière forte particulière. Pour notre recherche, nous avons choisi les quatre volumes de « Souvenirs d’enfance » de Marcel Pagnol : « La Gloire de mon père », « Le Chateau de ma mère », « Le Temps des secrets » et « Le Temps des amours » dont le plus ancien remonte à 1956. Ensuite, pour que l’analyse des différences dans les énoncés de représentants des couches sociales variées soit possible, nous avons recouru à plusieurs dictionnaires afin d’extraire du corpus tous les termes classés régionaux. Par la suite, nous avons essayé de voir quelles sont les variations en fonction des particularités syntaxiques, phonétiques et phonologiques. L’étape suivante est consacrée à l’étude des facteurs extralinguistiques tels le contexte, les classes sociales, le sexe, l’âge, la profession, le niveau d’études et la localisation. Enfin, nous présentons les résultats de la recherche qui démontrent l’image de la région en question et de ses habitants comme fortement attachée à l’identité méridionale. Le Midi découvre ainsi sa vivacité, son amour pour la faune et la flore, sa sociabilité et le sens de la réciprocité. Les habitants, quelle que soit leur origine sociale, sont toujours présentés de façon aimable, sympathique et avec le courage et l’enthousiasme pour le travail. Cette recherche nous a permis de montrer qu’une grande hétérogénéité d’un groupe des personnes et ses comportements variés sont à l’origine des différences dans le parler. Il s’avère aussi que l’image de la belle Provence et de l’identité provençale sont profondément liées à la langue et tous ses composants ainsi qu’à la culture et réalité méridionale.
