A Literary Fiction and Historical Facts in Orhan Pamuk's Novel "Nights of Plague"

Praca licencjacka ma na celu zbadanie relacji między fikcją literacką a faktami historycznymi w powieści Orhana Pamuka pt. „Noce zarazy”. Wybitny turecki pisarz podjął w swoim dziele temat epidemii dżumy i przemian politycznych w Imperium Osmańskim na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, w tym odrywania się od imperium kolejnych ziem, osadzając akcję powieści na fikcyjnej śródziemnomorskiej wyspie Minger. Autor niniejszej pracy na wybranych przykładach historycznych postaci, wydarzeń i przedsiębiorstw pojawiających się w powieści bada ich zgodność z rzeczywistością historyczną, używając do tego dostępnych opracowań historycznych. Pierwszy rozdział pracy koncentruje się na analizie trzech postaci historycznych lub ewidentnie wzorowanych na historycznych przedstawionych w powieści oraz ich zgodności z ich prawdą historyczną. Drugi rozdział dokonuje tego samego w odniesieniu do trzech wydarzeń historycznych, opisanych lub wspomnianych w powieści. Natomiast trzeci i ostatni rozdział dotyczy kilku przedsiębiorstw żeglugowych i jednego biura podróży pojawiających się w powieści oraz tego, czy są one wierne swoim historycznym pierwowzorom. Analiza powyższych elementów powieści pozwoliła orzec, że Orhan Pamuk włożył dużo wysiłku, aby jego powieść, jak najlepiej oddawała realia historyczne czasów i miejsca, w jakich została osadzona akcja jego powieści.

The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to examine the relationship between literary fiction and historical facts in Orhan Pamuk's novel "Nights of Plague". The outstanding Turkish writer took up the subject of the plague epidemic and political changes in the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, including the separation of subsequent lands from the empire, in his work, setting the action of the novel on the fictional Mediterranean island of Minger. The author of this thesis examines their compliance with historical reality using selected examples of historical figures, events and companies appearing in the novel, using available historical studies. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on the analysis of three historical figures or clearly modeled on historical figures presented in the novel and their compliance with their historical truth. The second chapter does the same in relation to three historical events described or mentioned in the novel. The third and final chapter, on the other hand, concerns several shipping companies and one travel agency appearing in the novel and whether they are faithful to their historical prototypes. The analysis of the above elements of the novel allowed us to state that Orhan Pamuk put a lot of effort into ensuring that his novel best reflected the historical realities of the times and places in which the action of his novel was set.
