Candomble - slaves' religion in 21st century Brazil

Candomblé to religia afrobrazylijska, której powstanie wiąże się nieodłącznie z kulturą sprowadzonych do Brazylii niewolników. Autor pracy dokonuje syntezy dotyczącej tej religii i stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania dotyczące jej atrakcyjności dla ludzi w XXI w. Podstawą jest opis tła dla powstania religii - krótka historia niewolnictwa w Brazylii, w tym pochodzenie etniczne i kulturowe niewolników. Następnie przedstawiona jest historia religii, której powstanie datuje się na XIX w., oraz jej ewolucja w kolejnym stuleciu, aż do dnia dzisiejszego. Analizując statystyki, autor opisuje stan religii candomblé obecnie. Duża część pracy poświęcona została na opis podstawowych wierzeń oraz praktyk religijnych i tym samym odpowiada na pytanie na czym polega ta religia. Przedstawione zostały najważniejsze bóstwa, rytuały, w tym sposób inicjacji, możliwość zdobywania kolejnych stopni w hierarchii religijnej i, w końcu, mitologia bóstw orixás, wraz z przykładowymi mitami. Ostatni rozdział rozpoczyna próba uchwycenia relacji pomiędzy religią candomblé a moralnością. Jest to dla autora punkt wyjścia, dla rozważań nad czynnikami przyciągającymi do tej wciąż żywej i rozwijającej się religii w Brazylii XXI w.

Candomblé is an Afro-Brazilian religion, which is unseparatedely related to the culture of slaves brought to Brazil. The thesis is the author's syntesis of the topic of the religion. The author tries to answer to questions referring to it's attractiveness to the people in the 21st century. The basis for that is grounded in a description of the background of the creation of the religion – the short history of slavery in Brazil, including slaves' ethnic and cultural origins. Furthermore, the author presents the history of the religion, that is said to have started in 19th century, and it's evolution in next centuries, until recent years. Analysing statistics, the author describes the status of the candomblé religion today. The large part of the thesis covers a description of basic beliefs and religious practices and, thus, answers to the question about what is candomblé all about. Most important gods, rituals, including the way of the initiation, possibility of reaching levels in the religious hierarchy, and finally the mitology of orixás, with exemplary myths, were presented. The last chapter starts with an attempt to capture the relation between the religion candomblé and the morality. It is for the author a starting point to the reflections on factors which attract to this alive and evolving religion in 21st century Brazil.
