Depictions of a dead body in photographs from wars and armed conflicts in the World Press Photo competition in 1993-2023

Niniejsza praca magisterska jest próbą analizy przedstawień martwego ciała na fotografii z wojen i konfliktów zbrojnych w zdjęciach nagrodzonych w konkursie World Press Photo pod kątem sprawczości przedstawień martwego ciała i ich możliwości oddziaływania na odbiorcę. Praca uwzględnia kwestie takie jak autentyczność zdjęć, kategorię świadka i świadectwa, koncepcji studium i punctum oraz problematykę sieci, w której fotografie funkcjonują. Dodatkowo praca odwołuje się do teorii z dziedzin takich jak studia nad śmiercią i studia nad martwym ciałem. W pracy rozważany jest także problem rozróżnienia między podmiotem i przedmiotem w fotografii.

This master's thesis is an attempt to analyze the representations of the dead body in photographs from wars and armed conflicts in the photos awarded in the World Press Photo competition in terms of the agency of the representations of the dead body and their ability to influence the recipient. The work takes into account issues such as the authenticity of photos, the category of witness and testimony, the concepts of studium and punctum, and the issue of the network in which photographs function. Additionally, the work refers to theories from fields such as death studies and dead body studies. The work also considers the problem of distinguishing between the subject and the object in photography.
