The thesis “The Central European identity in the context of Milan Kundera’s essay „The tragedy of Central Europe”” centers around the issue of defining the cultural identity of Central Europe in the wake of communist regime. The hypothesis posed in the paper states that an autonomous, shared Central European identity was formed precisely in the second half of the twentieth century, and this was caused by a numer of cultural and geopolitical factors, but especially by the shifts in the way the culture was perceived that happened in the course of the century. The focus of the thesis is the analysis of the problem with finding and fully defining the compositional elements that form the Central European identity, since that is essential for a clear portrayal of the situation and condition of the Central Europe.This work was written on the basis of source materials from academic literature, specialist periodicals, and internet sources. The key text is the essay The tragedy of Central Europe by Milan Kundera.The conclusions drawn in this thesis indicate the existence of a Central European identity in the second half of the 20th century, based on the concept of culture being a supreme value that tied the Western civilization together. The Central European nations resisted both the destruction of culture’s position by the communist system, and the its devaluation of in the post-cultural world.
