Role of the internet in popularizing concepts of civil society and gender equality in Egypt

Artykuł jest próbą analizy roli, jaką odgrywa Internet w kształtowaniu postaw obywatelskich Egipcjan od momentu jego upowszechnienia do czasów dzisiejszych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wydarzeń "Rewolucji 25 Stycznia", która stała się ucieleśnieniem powiedzenia: "informacja to władza". Artykuł omawia drogi, jakimi społeczeństwo sieci dąży do demokratyzacji państwa i upowszechnienia idei równości wszystkich obywateli bez względu na płeć czy inne wyznaczniki tożsamości. Praca ukazuje także ograniczenia, na jakie napotykają aspiracje młodych demokratów, jak cenzura ze strony władz państwowych, bieda, analfabetyzm oraz niektóre tradycyjne wartości kultury muzułmańskiej.

This article is an attempt to analyze the role of the Internet in promoting anactive civil position among young Egyptians. It deals with the period of Hosni Mubarak’s rule and after his ousting from power. A strong emphasis is put on the preparation of the revolution and its course, since this was an important moment in the socio-political history of Egypt. The author discusses the way the network of society seeks democracy and promotes the idea of equality for all citizens, regardless of gender or other identity markers. There is, however, a range of restrictions on publishing on the web which young Egyptians have to face, including poverty and illiteracy on the one hand and censorship on behalf of the state on the other. Surprisingly, the revolution, which began a year ago on 25 January resulted in slowing down the process of women’s emancipation, and thus female activism in the offline world has severe limitations due to traditional Islamic values. Therefore, women are more likely to participate in social life online. This leads to the conclusion that the Internet plays an important role in the processes of civil society formation, confirming and reinforcing the previously held concept. The methodological basis of this study is the postmodern assumption that information equals power, which springs from Foucault’s concept of knowledge and power. Real life examples presented in this article support this assertion.
