Homoseksualista jako Inny w "Samotnym Mężczyźnie" Christophera Isherwooda i "Zuchu" Edmunda White'a

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest dwóm znaczącym amerykańskim pisarzom homoseksualnym XX wieku, Christopherowi Isherwoodowi i Edmundowi White’owi oraz analizie ich największych dzieł Samotnego Mężczyzny (Isherwood) oraz Zucha (White). Kolejne rozdziały pokazują w jaki sposób każdy z nich wplatał do swoich książek wątki biograficzne. W wyżej wymienionych utworach obydwaj opisali życie białego homoseksualnego mężczyzny, za punkt wyjścia wybrali jednak dwa różne momenty życia, dwa różne etapy akceptacji samego siebie, jako homoseksualisty. Pomimo tych znaczących różnic, obaj bohaterowie czują że stoją na pozycji Innego, wśród rodziny, znajomych, w społeczeństwie. Pierwszy rozdział pracy koncentruje się na przedstawieniu związku między gejowską tożsamością a byciem Innym, a także przybliża historię homoseksualizmu i literatury homoseksualnej. Druga część pracy poświęcona jest analizie wpływu biografii na literaturę homoseksualną. Trzecia i czwarta część pracy przybliża sylwetki Isherwooda i White’a oraz analizuje ich powieści.

This thesis is a study of two prominent American gay writers of the 20th century, Christopher Isherwood and Edmund White. The four chapters analyze their most acclaimed books, A Single Man (Isherwood) and A Boy’s Own Story (White), and show how, and to what extent, each of them incorporated biographical elements in their writing. Both authors wrote about white male homosexuals, in two various moments of their lives and different stages of self-acceptance. Despite those differences, their protagonists experience the feeling of being the Other, among friends, family, in society in general. The first chapter focuses on presenting a short history of homosexuality, the outline of gay literature and the relation between gay identity and being the Other. The second section of the work is devoted to introducing the concept of biographical criticism and its’ importance in reading and understanding homosexual literature. The third and fourth parts of the thesis introduce Isherwood and White and analyze their novels through the lenses of biographical criticism.
